Employees ransacked the Apple iPhone manufacturing unit

Protesting salary cuts, employees ransacked the Apple iPhone manufacturing unit in Bengaluru run by Taiwan-based tech giant Wistron Corporation. The violent attacks happened on Saturday by the night shift employees of the Narsapura plant (60 km from Bengaluru) over the sharp cut in their promised salary scale. Wistron promised Rs.21,000 per month to Engineering graduates. But the salary was subsequently reduced to Rs.16,000 and later to Rs.12,000. Non-engineering graduates’ salary was also reduced to Rs.8,000 per month.

According to some staffers, unrest was brewing for the past two months and on Friday night it got ignited when the salary was credited to their bank accounts again with a reduced salary. The anger turned into violence when the shift ended in the morning and hundreds of employees ransacked the office and destroyed many glass panels, vehicles, and cabins of senior officials. A vehicle was burned. Police arrested 80 employees for ransacking the manufacturing unit.

The manufacturing unit is having presently 2000 employees. The Taiwan-based company got 43 acres from State Government in Narsapura Industrial Area after it proposed an investment of Rs.2,900 crores and providing employment to more than 10,000 people. Apple’s iPhone SE and Internet of Things (IoT) products and biotech devices were produced in this unit.

Police reached the spot in the morning and cases are registered for violence and destruction of property. The video shot by employees on the violent attack is now going viral in media.
