BJP fields Enforcement Directorate’s ace investigator Rajeshwar Singh as the candidate from Sarojini Nagar, Lucknow

Will Chiddu breathe a sigh of relief or shake with fear, now that Rajeshwar is in the BJP?

BJP on Tuesday fielded Enforcement Directorate’s ace investigator Rajeshwar Singh as the candidate from Sarojini Nagar at Lucknow. Rajeshwar Singh got voluntary retirement from the service on Monday – January 31. The 48-year-old officer with pending more than 12 years of service has many credits in his career by Chief Investigating Officer of ED in 2G Scam, probing cases against Congress heavyweights like P Chidambaram, Ahmed Patel, money laundering probe in Agusta Westland, investigations on charges against former Jharkhand Chief Minister Madhu Koda, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Jagan Reddy. He faced hell from both sides of the political spectrum as he went valiantly against the top leaders and top corporates in the country, bringing out the money trails in corruption-related cases.

Rajeshwar Singh shot to fame when he charge-sheeted and got the conviction of all in the Madhu Koda scam. Then he was ED’s choice to the Supreme Court when the apex Court asked to bring some young bold young officers to handle the 2G scam in late 2010. The 2G Scam led to the Aircel-Maxis scam and INX media bribery in which the former Finance and Home Minister, P Chidambaram was caught. But Rajeshwar faced many fake cases hoisted by the powerful lobby when he touched them. To his advantage, the country’s top lawyers and legal luminaries K K Venugopal, Harish Salve, Mukul Rohatgi, and many top lawyers appeared in courts and service tribunals’ pro-bono to defend the young honest officer.

Ideologically poles apart but eminent personalities like Dr. Subramanian Swamy and Prashant Bhushan vouched before the apex court about Rajeshwar Singh’s integrity and merit. On some occasions, when Subramanian Swamy was out of town his wife, veteran lawyer Roxna Swamy, landed in the Court to defend Rajeshwar Singh. Once Chief Justice of India H L Dattu remarked in open court “We trust this officer,” when his enemies filed fake complaints against him to prevent him from taking action against Chidambaram. Once in 2011, Justice G S Singhvi and Justice A K Ganguli bench which handled 2G Scam cases first ordered full protection to Rajeshwar Singh quashing 55 fake complaints against him hoisted by 2G scamsters in connivance with Chidambaram and Corporates. “Is this officer alive?,” asked the Judges before passing full protection to Rajeshwar Singh.

Rajeshwar Singh comes from an illustrious family of bureaucrats and top police officers in Uttar Pradesh who are all highly placed. His father was also one of the most renowned and decorated Police officers of Uttar Pradesh. He is from an influential Rajput community. His wife Laxmi Singh is an Inspector General from UP Cadre. Singh is an Engineering and Law Graduate. He obtained an Engineering Degree from the prestigious Indian School of Mines and a Law Degree from Delhi University. The UP Police’s best encounter specialist Rajeshwar also has a Doctorate in Human Rights. It is interesting to note that he faced many human rights cases in many of the encounter cases when the State was facing mafia menace in the late 90s and early 2000.

He was serving as Joint Director of ED’s Lucknow region from 2016 and many real estate firms like Amarpali cheating thousands of home buyers were brought to book by Rajeshwar Singh. Mafias and corrupt politicians feared him. He attached the entire assets of the ex-mining minister of UP. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath-led UP Government fully supported his brave actions against corrupt and mafia gangs.
