The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken into custody Editor – cum – Fixer Upendra Rai for the extortion of Rs.15 crores from a Mumbai based real estate company owner. Upendra Rai is currently in Tihar jail under judicial custody in the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) money laundering of more than Rs.100 crores and CBI team took him into custody on Saturday evening.
CBI had registered the case in the first week of May, when one Balvinder Singh Malhotra, running a real estate firm known as White Lion Real Estate Developers Pvt. Ltd. approached the CBI, complaining about Upendra Rai’s extortion. According to Malhotra, Upendra Rai and his staffer journalists working in the newly floated website The Print Line (theprintlines.com) approached the real estate businessman Malhotra who was then facing Income Tax investigation for money laundering and floating shell firms.
As per the complaint, the panicky Malhotra was forced to come to Upendra Rai’s home in Delhi. At his home, Rai showed volumes of Income Tax reports against Malhotra and the panicky real estate developer was forced to make a deal with Rai for Rs.15 crores for not publishing the news. Rai also promised that he will neutralize the Income Tax case against him by sharing the money with top Income Tax officers. Malhotra paid Rs.15 crores as a consultancy fees to Upendra Rai and his firms.
Upendra Rai, considered a benami operator of former tainted Finance Minister P Chidambaram was Editor in Sahara Group publications and Tehelka Magazine. He is believed to be close and acting as benami of several top Income Tax, IAS and IPS officers also and running a big extortion racket. CBI has also found that a very senior officer in their organization was in touch with him and providing information for extortion operations and plundering money through blackmailing.
CBI has already conducted raids at Income Tax office working at Scindia House in Mumbai and inspected the CCTV visuals to analyze the visits of Upendra Rai and his links with senior tax officers. There are several complaints already agencies have received about Upendra Rai’s blackmailing using the Income Tax raid findings about the purses details of VIPS from fugitive Nirav Modi and Gitanjali Gems showrooms.

Upendra Rai who claims to be only 36 years of age is having two flats in Mumbai, one in Hazratganj in Lucknow, one in Pune and a huge bungalow in his village and a flat in London purchased along with Sandeep Wadhwa of the tainted Sahara group. He is also having a big bungalow worth Rs.30 crores in Delhi, Greater Kailash – 1.
Upendra Rai also owns flat worth Rs.10 crores ($1.48 million) in Asha Deep Building, Flat No 801, 9, Hailey Road, New Delhi which was bought from Naresh Prasad Sareen and Madhu Sareen for an amount of Rs.6.5 crores.
The tainted journalist cum extortionist is having a Maybach car worth Rs.4.5 crores ($0.7 million). Upendra Rai also has an Audi 6 bearing registration number DL 3CCN 6148 worth Rs.70 lakhs, a Toyota Innova Crysta (DL3CCN 1915) worth Rs.25 lakhs, Maruti SX4 (DL9CX 3081) worth Rs.11 lakhs, and a Honda Accord (DL3CBA 5300) worth Rs.26 lakhs – all registered in his name.
