Congress’s high power forum, the Congress Working Committee, known as the CWC is nowadays called the Congress Wrestling Committee. Most of the people who cannot walk without support in the CWC are busy fighting amongst themselves. Gujarat politicians want to kick out Kerala ones and a second category is of those who have neither fought never won any elections in the past decade! Amazing as it sounds, a political party’s highest forum, the CWC is filled with people who have not won or even contested elections! It does not take a rocket scientist to figure out that the fate of such parties is written on the wall. These armchair politicians are waiting for the public to get fed up and they may get an anti-incumbency vote and probably God may help them – forgetting that God only helps those who put in sincere efforts and are clean at heart, and hardworking! Do they have those qualities?
When was the last time A K Antony or Ambika Soni or Anand Sharma or Ghulam Nabi Azad addressed the public in a rally? When did they last go and stay with the workers whose morale is already down? When did they last stay in rural India? It must be a few decades back!!! And Congress dreams of coming back to power!!!
Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi have the advantage of being young and they can travel extensively and spend time in rugged terrains of India but they prefer to engage in Delhi’s posh circles and love to have a lavish lifestyle with their non-party friends.
The basic problem of CWC
Congress did not change the structure of the CWC after the washout in the Lok Sabha elections of 2014 and continued with it even after Lok Sabha defeat in 2019. The only change was that Sonia Gandhi made Rahul Gandhi as the President of the party and Rahul ran away after the 2019 election defeat. Those leaders who projected the wrong picture should be held responsible. Gandhi’s were not on the field. It was the responsibility of General Secretary in-charge of States, State Presidents, and people who canvassed for Lok sabha tickets for their loyalists not based on merit, point out many Congress leaders.
Congress may not have any voter but has the highest number of ticket claimants and the most difficult candidates’ selection process! What an irony!! They should now decide the candidate in this scenario two years before and an alternate candidate. And let both build a cadre in their constituency as Congress party has no cadre left whereas BJP and RSS have expanded their cadre base when Congress leaders slept in AC rooms in Delhi and partied. Both Rahul and Priyanka should go and spend time with the candidates at his/ her house in his/ her constituency and energise the candidate and his cadre and his voters rather than vacationing abroad observes many leaders.
Many Congress leaders accuse that Congress leadership (Sonia, Rahul, and Priyanka) are misguided by some coteries in the CWC. Despite having absolute control over party among the three Gandhis still can’t fill party posts till the village level!! If it sounds shocking, it is because of the non-serious attitude and paying no attention to restructuring the cadre. The grassroots-level politics of Congress is nearly zero in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra, Tamilnadu, Andra Pradesh, Telangana, etc. Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi have the advantage of being young and they can travel extensively and spend time in rugged terrains of India but they prefer to engage in Delhi’s posh circles and love to have a lavish lifestyle with their non-party friends. These non-party friends actually guide them on how to function. This is the problem the Congress faces for the past decade, say many veteran Congress leaders.
Many leaders say Congress should restructure itself from a debating club to a serious political party with a “vision document “ which is clearly understandable to common masses and not a complex paper made by people like Chidambaram and Jairam Ramesh, who have no idea about the ground reality. Why would a person vote for Congress? Congress has to realise this harsh reality that they have lost people’s faith and respect and has been reduced to a debating club in parliament and on TV shows. Congress is still not doing anything to change its image to that of a serious political party with a vision! And this is only possible via grassroots politics and social movement which requires its leaders to be at the district level from now onwards to connect with the public. Those leaders who don’t want to stay in district headquarters till elections should be thrown out. What is their use? They are a drag on the party and Congress should be trimmer now, observe many Congress leaders.
Congress lost touch of the ground realities and lost but still even today these leaders continue to strive to get Rajya Sabha seats and retain bungalows and hang around in Delhi.
“A ruler has to be ruthless and has only one work – to give task and to fix accountability!! Sonia and Rahul completely failed in that. They should have held leaders responsible for two consecutive defeats and shown the door. Graceful leaders would have voluntarily resigned and retired, but disgraceful and greedy leaders continue to hang around and cause more damage. They needed to be booted out but Congress failed in that and the result is that 2024 is also in the hands of that rotten lot. An old saying – he who doesn’t change with time or evolve with time perishes – is what is happening today. Despite having 12 crore members, Congress cannot shortlist 50 new leaders! Amazing,” said a senior leader, depressed with the working style of his party high-level forums.
Over-reliance on Rajya Sabha
The gradual dependence on Rajya Sabha leaders increased and they completely disregarded the Lok Sabha leaders and those leaders who fought and lost elections. This changed the fighting nature of Congress as a new class of Khan Market leaders emerged who had the ears of the Gandhis and Ahmed Patel and Chidambaram. Congress lost touch of the ground realities and lost but still even today these leaders continue to strive to get Rajya Sabha seats and retain bungalows and hang around in Delhi. They still are the eyes and ears of the Gandhis and never allow the new generation to grow and so the writing on the wall for 2024 is clear, say many frustrated Congress leaders.
Congress is still not realising that India elections have now turned into Presidential-style of the United States. It is Modi vs Rahul and not BJP vs Congress. It is Hinduism vs Appeasement of Minorities, not Hinduism Vs Secularism, it is BJP plus RSS cadre Vs the non-existent or ever diminishing Congress cadre. Three Gandhis are not reinventing themselves nor seriously coming up with any sustained effort and vision. They are only hoping that negative votes of BJP will bring them back to power and forgetting the basic fact that BJP is penetrating into many areas, where once Congress was in control.

Nicely written, not too much critical of Congress, on the contrary some wise advice. But, I am sure they won’t listen…vinashkaal vipreet budhhi….Time for collapse of Congress has arrived and India deserves a better opposition.
