[dropcap color=”#008040″ boxed=”yes” boxed_radius=”8px” class=”” id=””]E[/dropcap]ven as the CPI-M is engaged in the annihilation of Hindu social and political activists in Kerala, the factionalism or strong internecine warfare which has unofficially divided the party into two has come out in the open. The faction led by Prakash Karat, the former general secretary of the party, has established its supremacy and command over the present general secretary Sitaram Yechury.
The recently concluded central committee meeting of the CPI-M at New Delhi has literally pre-empted the move by the Yechury faction to forge any kind of alliance with the Congress in the upcoming election to the Uttar Pradesh assembly. This was pointed out by Ramachandran, a long time observer of the global Communist movement and presently the chief editor of Janmabhumi, considered as an organ of the Right Wing organizations in Kerala.
The former secretary of the CPI-M has indirectly agreed in the article that there is a section of “powerful and influential intellectuals” in the country working against the Modi government and the so called “communal fascism”.
In a signed front page article on Saturday, Ramachandran has pointed out two contradictory lines existing in the CPI-M. Sitaram Yechury, who is having a special relation with Congress president Sonia Gandhi and vice president Rahul Gandhi is of the view that the BJP is a Fascist organisation.
Yechury, who was elected as the party general secretary in the Visakhapatnam session of the CPI-M Party Congress with the active support of the Bengal unit of the party, is a strong supporter of the CPI-M-Congress alliance. Though the central leadership of the CPI-M had ruled out any kind of alliance with the Congress in the 2016 assembly election, the Bengal unit of the party cocked a snook at the leadership and went ahead with forming an alliance with the Congress. Yechury is obliged to the Bengal faction of the party as he was elected to the Rajya Sabha from the Bengal assembly.
[dropcap color=”#008040″ boxed=”yes” boxed_radius=”8px” class=”” id=””]T[/dropcap]he CPI-M secretary has no other jobs right now other than touring all over the world criticising the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi describing the party in power as Fascists, communalists and capitalists. But Prakash Karat, who never got along with Yechury and had vehemently opposed Yechury’s move to become the party general secretary, has been speaking from all available platforms that the BJP is not a Fascist organisation. In an article in The Indian Express dated September 6, 2016, (Fight Against BJP) Karat has explained to Yechury what is a Fascist organisation. “In India today neither has Fascism been established, nor are the conditions present-in political, economic and class terms,” Karat wrote in The Indian Express, a newspaper where Seema Chishti, the current wife of Yechury works as a senior editor.

With the powerful Karat faction throwing to the dustbin Yechury’s proposal for a possible alliance with the Congress, Ramachandran points out that way has been cleared for Sitaram Yechury’s exit as party secretary. “This has been the tradition of the CPI-M for long. When the party find that the party secretary is pursuing an outdated policy which is not in synch with the party’s present line of thinking, the incumbent is sent for rest and recuperation. “That was how EMS Namboodiripad was sent packing to Kerala and P Sundarayya was given forced retirement,” reminds Ramachandran.

Yechury depended on old friend N Ram, owner of The Hindu daily in Chennai, an unofficial mouthpiece of the CPI-M for articulating his views. “The Narendra Modi government is not a fascist government in a technical form,” Yechury told in an interview to The Hindu which has been published in the September 20 edition of the daily. This is nothing but a face saving statement by the party secretary, who is under siege. You remove the term technical from the statement and then it reads that the government is not fascist. This means that Yechury has become Karat, literally 24-carrot Karat,” said Ramachandran. He was referring to the nature of the CPI-M leaders as past masters in the art of juggling with words, sentences and terms.
He has also pointed out that all is not well within the CPI-M of Kerala. “Thomas Issac threatened to quit as finance minister following the open snubbing he received from Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan a couple of days ago. Issas who is undergoing a bad patch following the suicide of his two personal staff members in quick succession was also upset with the chief minister for appointing Prof Gita Gopinath of Harvard University as the economic advisor to the LDF government.
Issac who claims that he is the best economist in South India (he has a Ph D on the lives of coir workers in Alappuzha) is cut up with the chief minister for “importing a foreign economist” without consulting him. In addition to this, Issac had ditched Pinarayi Vijayan and moved over to the V S Achuthanandan faction in the Kerala CPI-M. Achuthanandan who was in the running for the chief ministership of the State was anointed as the Fidel Castro of Kerala and kicked upwards as Administrative Reforms Commissioner. But the 93-year old veteran of the party is yet to get a chair or office to sit and do his work though it is more than two months he was issued the appointment order as ARC!
