Did Business Standard and Caravan do a Paid News item for Chidambaram by carrying a Scroll post?

Published by

By the evening of May 16, soon after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) uploaded the First Information Report (FIR) against Karti Chidambaram, a curious news item appeared in Scroll website and soon the same was carried out in Caravan Magazine’s website and Business Standard. The article titled “Raids on Karti Chidambaram: What the CBI has not answered” was questioning CBI, though the agency’s 12 page FIR was crystal clear about the violations in the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance granted by the then Finance Minister P Chidambaram to INX Media and its quid-pro-quo with son Karti and his firms.

This 12 page FIR clearly indicates the violations and acts of nepotism committed by Chidambaram.

The writer of the article in the Scroll website is Sruthisagar Yamunan, who was earlier a Chennai based reporter of ‘The Hindu’ newspaper and grandson of veteran lawyer K Parasaran and nephew of senior lawyer Mohan Parasaran. The Chidambaram family is very close with the  Parasaran family. Here the writer Sruthisagar Yamunan tries to debunk the CBI FIR and asks questions that a sensible journalist would not ask. The writer even asks why CBI did not name any officials. Any sensible person would be aware that in FIRs, many details would not be put and all details will come only in the charge sheet after further probes are done.

This 12 page FIR clearly indicates the violations and acts of nepotism committed by Chidambaram. This one line is enough for any sensible reporter that CBI has enough details about the violations committed by the former Finance Minister Chidambaram. “Such deceitful and fallacious proposal was favourably considered by the officials of Finance Ministry and approved by the then Finance Minister,” said the FIR.  If the writer missed this line, then he is starting to create doubt in the minds of the readers and hence the only conclusion that a reader can draw is that this is a paid news post for Chidambaram and son.

The fact that Caravan Magazine and Business Standard also carried the report from Scroll website adds credence to this theory.  Caravan Magazine published this article even in their Facebook page and Twitter account!

Business Standard also carried this Scroll article supporting Chidambaram and Karti.

This article shows the depths to which India’s media has sunk. The sad part is that many are blissfully ignorant of the media’s role in shaping news to aid a particular viewpoint. What is even more surprising is that this specious article is also published by reputed media sites like Business Standard and Caravan Magazine.

  • Sorry Sir, Business Standard & Caravan were or are not reputed Magazines. Everybody knows their intention of Publication of Magazines, In fact Caravan was closed for decades & some one with vested interest revived it in 2009. Both have no mass readership. They run stories twisting, hiding fact & misleading people to make happy their pay masters & create nuisance to Ruling Party specially targeting Na Mo.

  • There is this politician in Chennai who hosts monthly lunch for senior journalists in the city without fail. The meeting sets the agenda like what is to be written, who is to be highlighted, which politician has to be black listed and ignored and things like that. The senior journos in turn would feed their friends in other media some spicy ingredients for publishing as planted stories. At the end of the meeting these journalists are paid Rs 10,000 to Rs 25,000 depending on the circulation of the dailies/ periodicals they work for.

  • Most of the national.media was pampered by the corrupt Congress regime ,now they are paying back to the corrupt in their own way though it is suppression of facts.and anti nationals.

  • Social media is exposing crooks / their blabbering in media and the crooks are getting angry. They had a nice ride thro' print and TV medium to peddle their lies but the crooks are now stuck in the headlights of social media.Your no nonsense article exposing parasaran and his poodles tagging along for the crooked family is another first in Indian social media.Time the rats are taken out of their holes.A spread sheet is now necessary to connect crooks and their collaborators in administration, opposition, media, industry.A ready reckenor for greater understanding.

  • You have written "What is even more surprising is that this specious article is also published by reputed media sites like Business Standard and Caravan Magazine." I disagree here. Business Standard has no reputation. It can carry any shit for a price. (Pardon me for the language but I have no option when I have to convey the message about BS). There are next to none media entities with credibility or respect. Hence please don't call them "reputed media".

  • The more I read about the shenanigans of our media, both print and visual, the less I respect them, their owners, editors and contributors? Does this punya bhoomi descending into a pava or sinful bhoomi with no institution having any cherishable standards?
