Was is sheer coincidence that SP supported the Nuclear Deal in 2007 and Congress dropped its DA investigation of Mulayam?

We are in possession of a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Preliminary Enquiry report from  mid-2007, which establishes registering a Disproportionate Assets (DA) case against Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav and his son Akhilesh Yadav, the current Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. This CBI probe report is a classic example of how CBI may have been used to blackmail political opponents.

Using this report it is alleged that the Congress, then in power, arm-twisted Mulayam as and when needed. After supporting the UPA government during the trust vote on Indo-US Nuclear Treaty, the same CBI was asked to close the case. Quid Pro Quo?

The 41 page CBI Preliminary Enquiry report on Mulayam’s family clearly shows how CBI may have been used by the ruling party to arm-twist its political rivals. The complete report is published at the end of this post. In late 2006, a local Congress leader Congress leader Vishwanath Chaturvedi approached Supreme Court seeking CBI probe against Mulayam for amassing wealth. CBI jumps into the fray and bats along with Chaturvedi and starts the probe.

Mulayam’s entire family and their history and their income is scanned by the CBI. Even Mulayam’s personal life is fair game. Page 3 of the report talks about how Mulayam Singh got in touch with his second wife Sadhana. CBI also wades into the salacious details of his relationship with Sadhana. Her son Prateek’s school certificate shows Mulayam as father, though he was born during her first marriage. Before declaring her as wife, Mulayam’s name was used in her son’s school certificate.

CBI crept under every rock and crevice and lists the expense and income details of Mulayam family from 1993 to 2005. It even does an in-depth examination of Mulayam’s Chartered Accountants, investments and alleged benami investments etc.

Even though Mulayam is a cunning politician, the CBI establishes DA accumulation through meticulous research by scanning even the most trivial details of domestic purchases and expenses. Accounting all incomes and expenditures, the CBI points out that a DA case has to be registered against Mulayam and Akhilesh. Did Congress confront Mulayam with this report? And convince him of the error of his ways by opposing the Nuclear Deal? Or did Mulayam have an epiphany? And serendipitously the ruling party called off the CBI inquiry, also realizing the error of its ways?

Reading of this 41-page document probe report of CBI will give you the biography of the Yadav family and an idea on how a ruling party, especially in a coalition, tackles the opposition leaders.
