After Cho Ramaswamy’s demise, Gurumurthy has become the Editor of the iconic Tamil political-cultural influential Magazine Thuglak. Though he is a Chartered Accountant by qualification, Gurumurthy came to the limelight after his stunning expose’s on the illegalities of Reliance founder Dhirubhai Ambani in Indian Express from the 70s. In fact the movie Guru, directed by Mani Ratnam on Ambani, features the role of Gurumurthy played by R Madhavan as an intrepid reporter.

The trio – Ramnath Goenka, Arun Shourie and S Gurumurthy – had redefined the sleepy Indian journalism’s investigative reporting culture. And the reporting at last went against the mighty Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi, shaking the Nehru family dynasty oriented Indian political landscape. There might be arguments about the Indian Express earthshaking reporting culture, but the fact was that it was a historic and golden moment in Indian journalism by the media in gaining courage to write against the ruling community.

As a trained Auditor, Gurumurthy used his professional skills in reporting the Indian Express series, exposing the buccaneer Dhirubhai Ambani and his unholy nexus with political masters. Shourie – Gurumurthy series are a textbook case of investigative journalism.

His series on Bofors case shook Rajiv Gandhi leading to his arrest. Shourie, Goenka, Jethmalani and Gurumurthy played a stellar role in collapsing the Rajiv Government which came to power with 411 MPs. These mavericks’ brave attempts led to the collapse of the Congress Party across the country in the 1989 Lok Sabha elections.

[dropcap color=”#008040″ boxed=”yes” boxed_radius=”8px” class=”” id=””]G[/dropcap]urumurthy came in touch with Goenka in his early 20s as his Auditor and his passion towards journalism led to several sensational reports. After Goenka’s death, he continued his association with South-India centric New Indian Express. Later Gurumurthy concentrated on Economic Analysis and Corporate Advising, leaving active journalism.

Now he is back as an Editor, that too of a strategic iconic Magazine like Thuglak.

His full page articles which appear on and off on corruption of mighty people always lead to logical conclusions, forcing government agencies to act. Among many such reports, the last one was on Sun TV Group’s frauds in establishing an illegal telephone exchange and Attorney General’s frauds in protecting the corrupt by giving false legal opinions.

Being a Right Winger and a Nationalist, Gurumurthy was closely associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the BJP. He combined with Ajit Doval and Professor R Vaidyanathan in authoring the report on Black money stashed from India in 2010, igniting the call for retrieval of black money from abroad.

Now he is back as an Editor, that too of an iconic magazine like Thuglak. Let us wait for his interventions as Editor in Tamil Nadu’s polity and culture, which was handled by Cho for more than five decades. PGurus wishes him all the best in his new endeavour.

  1. I have met Mr.S.Gurumurthy once in madurai airport and second time in Chennai airport. Such a genius is a very simple and lovable personality. Cho has selected him long back as his successor.
He is doing a commendable job following the foot prints of Cho.
even the circulation is increasing, clearly indicates that Mr.S Gurumurthy is the one and only best choice.
He had successfully crossed many hurdles before, hence handling thuglak very well.No doubt he is the epitome for impartial journalism.
    God bless his services.

  3. We were crying after hearing Cho Ramaswamy’s death and felt he was not replaceable. But the choice of Guru has really conveyed that nature always provides replacements.Very good choice.Thought Guru doesn’t have satire of Cho, he has great analytical abilities which can tear the falsehoods.

  5. I am an ardent fan of Cho’s Thuglak .. There could be no better genius other than Mr Gurumurthy who could do justice to ‘being the editor of Thuglak’ .

We are very glad about this and we are confident that Thuglak will survive for many decades now

  6. We can guage what is going to be Tuglak’s article s like fromthe issue dated14th december in which he has in his usual style analysed Dr Manmohan singh’s speech in Parliament.

  7. After legendary Cho “Tughlaq” certainly needed someone of his stature. Very happy that another genius called SG is taking over from where Cho left it. I’m sure Gurumurthy ji will look at coming out with English version of Tughalaq (or revive Pickwick started by Cho earlier)

  8. Shri Gurumurthy is the best possible replacement to the genius Cho. Being a reader of Thugluk since its inception, I am extremely glad that it continues beyond Cho.
