Marcos at strategic Chinese borders to deal with China’s errant PLA

India is going to deploy crack commando teams from Special Force and Navy’s Marine commandos ‘MARCOS’ at strategic Chinese borders to deal with China’s errant People Liberation Army (PLA). According to highly places sources, the decision is taken at the highest level from India to deal with the adventurism of China, which changes stand even after the decisions are taken in the commanders meet to defuse the tension. After several rounds of talks to defuse tension at the Line of Actual Control (LAC) have failed so far, India is preparing for the long haul and has bolstered its readiness by deploying crack commandos of the Navy at some stand-off points.

Indian Army has already positioned its Special Forces and Para-commandos and Delhi has given green signals to place the elite Marine commandos (MARCOS) of the Navy to join for patrolling at the Pangong Ts (lake). This Pangong lake in eastern Ladakh is one of the four of five face-off sites where the Indian and Chinese troops are in face to face situation for the past seven months. The elite Marcos commandos will take positions at the lake and these commandos may also be rotated at the other flashpoints, sources said here on Saturday. This will enable them to familiarize themselves with the weather, topography, and how to survive in harsh winters. Incidentally, the temperature has already dipped to minus ten degrees in several parts of Ladakh and will plummet to minus 30 degrees in the coming weeks.

Focussing on seamless operations by the Army, IAF, and Navy, the security establishment has in the past few months brought in Garud commandoes of the IAF and Special Frontier Force (SFF).

The army has already supplied more than adequate prefabricated huts for the troops now readying themselves for deployment in the winter months. More than one lakh troops from India and China are now positioned at the LAC in the 1,700 km long LAC in Ladakh. China has also ramped up its logistical support for its troops for a long winter there. The MARCOS commandoes are one of the world’s best trained and were seen in action during the initial phase of the Mumbai terror attack in 2008.

Elaborating upon the objective of positioning the MARCOS at the Pangong lake with the army commandoes and Garud commandoes of the Indian Air Force, sources said it will further infuse synergy and boost integration of the three forces.

The Chinese army has pushed in additional high-powered boats to patrol the Pangong Lake besides building a jetty. While India has asked China to remove the jetty as it is the Indian territory, the security establishment has also flown in sophisticated boats for the commandos for effective functioning, they said.

Focussing on seamless operations by the Army, IAF, and Navy, the security establishment has in the past few months brought in Garud commandoes of the IAF and Special Frontier Force (SFF). Both these units are already manning some of the critical heights on the south and north banks of the Pangong lake.

The two sides have held eight rounds of military-level talks and the next round may take place in the coming days. The Corps Commanders will take stock of the situation on the LAC in the forthcoming round and reiterate their commitment to sustain the momentum of the dialogue.
