Amid India-China border tension escalating, India on Monday banned 59 Chinese Apps including popular Tik Tok and Cam Scanner. Citing servers are kept in China and misuse of privacy and leaking of data of Indian users, India’s Ministry of Information Technology passed the order banning and blocking use in India under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act. Apart from Tik Tok and Cam Scanner, other 57 Apps are very less used in India. The full list of 59 Chinese Apps is published at the end of this article.
In the three-page order banning the Chinese Apps, the Ministry said that these Apps “prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, the security of the State and public order.” The Order said: “The Ministry of Information Technology has received many complaints from various sources including several reports about the misuse of some mobile apps available on Android and iOS platforms for stealing and surreptitiously transmitting users’ data in an unauthorized manner to servers which have locations outside India. The compilation of these data, its mining and profiling by elements hostile to national security and defence of India, which ultimately impinges upon the sovereignty and integrity of India, is a matter of very deep and immediate concern which requires emergency measures.”
The Ministry also said that Union Home Ministry, Intelligence Bureau, and CERT-IN also raised concerns about these Chinese Apps which are used in mobile phones and computers leading to many data leaks to servers in China. These 59 Apps, servers are mainly located in Beijing and other parts of China. The detailed list of banned 59 Apps is published below. These Apps will be disabled soon by mobile phone operators from customers’ machines.
