Is Kashmir slipping?

As the J&K Govt. returns to the Kashmir valley to administer the state, Mehbooba Mufti is going to have her hands full

IN 2013 PAINTING A WAR CRY ON A MOUNTAIN HILL WAS DISGUSTING FOR J&K CHIEF MINISTER
IN 2017 PAINTING SCHOOL WALLS IN COLOURS OF PAK FLAGS IS ALRIGHT

[dropcap color=”#008040″ boxed=”yes” boxed_radius=”8px” class=”” id=””]D[/dropcap]o Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti and her alliance partner Bharatiya Janta Party have any clue on how to handle the situation which is fast drifting away from the hands of state government machinery?

As Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah was quick to react to the changing mood in the Kashmir valley.

In June 2013 senior officers of the Indian army had to face a piquant situation during a high level Unified Headquarters meeting chaired by former Chief Minister (CM) Omar Abdullah.

It is during the same meeting the ex-CM had expressed serious concerns over a slogan, “Ajeet Hain Abheet Hain” painted by a army unit on the face of a mountain.

Abdullah had literally objected to the idea of painting the slogan on the mountain of the Zabarwan range close to the Dachigam National park overlooking the 15 corps headquarters of the Army.

He had even termed the act as ‘disgusting’.

Later Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir directed the army authorities to remove the slogan. Under pressure from different quarters and to prevent situation from taking an ugly turn the army authorities too had removed the slogan especially when it was claimed that it was also disturbing ecology of the mountain range.

As Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah was quick to react to the changing mood in the Kashmir valley.

After local army units started painting this slogan on the entry and exit gates of their units local residents started reacting to the development.

But after Indian army painted the mountain hill it provoked Chief Minister to issue a diktat to the army to remove it to contain public anger.

In contrast to this the situation has completely changed on ground zero in the last four years…

Now the students are openly chanting slogans hailing Pakistan during street protests in different parts of kashmir valley.

Local youth are kicking security personnel and humiliating them to provoke a strong reaction.

Others are scaling administrative blocks of college campuses to hoist Pakistani flags and more recently even the front gates of government school buildings have been painted in colours of Pakistani flag but no one in the state govt is willing to take note of the serious development on ground zero.

For the first time in over a decade more than 4000 army personnel had to carry out cordon and search operations across 2 dozen villages in Shopian district of Kashmir valley to track down presence of militants.

The army was trying to track down any foot prints of a big group of militants who had recently uploaded their video shot in the same district and was possibly hiding in the same area.

Even Omar Abdullah, who is currently occupying the post of leader of the opposition, is silent over these serious developments.

Leaders like former Union Minister Dr.Farooq Abdullah, after winning Srinagar by polls, have been making irresponsible statements and provoking nationalist forces in the state by singing in chorus with the separatists forces.

Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti and her alliance partner Bharatiya Janta Party have virtually no clue on how to handle the situation which is fast drifting away from the hands of state government machinery.

Challenges ahead for Mehbooba Mufti?

On May 8 when Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti would start working from her office in the civil secretariat complex in Srinagar she would be closely monitoring the situation in South Kashmir districts as it is here the real battle is going on between the nationalist and the separatist forces to establish their grip over Kashmir valley.

The entire area is in the grip of ‘radicalised’ youth and they are determined to take on the might of the security forces. There is complete breakdown of law and order situation and the same has emboldened local militant cadre to go out and loot bank cash vans and ATMs. Besides several incidents of weapon snatching have also come to light in the same area. Series of attacks and intimidation threats made to local policemen also point to complete failure of the law and order machinery. The emphasis is on silencing the Pro-Indian voices and crushing them at any cost.

Ahead of the beginning of annual Amarnath pilgrimage the BJP-PDP govt would be facing the real challenge of organising incident free yatra and keeping the entire yatra route free of stone pelting protesters to ensure safety of pilgrims.

Secondly the state government faces biggest challenge of establishing its rule of law on ground zero and kick start developmental activities to rope in unemployed youth and prevent them from falling in to the hands of militant handlers who are recruiting more youth to keep the terror pot boiling.

  1. An article on current tussle between BCCI, ICC & COA will be helpful -could not make out who is correct (COA/BCC!), who is greedy (Shashank Manohar/ BCC!?)?

  2. Doval and Ram Madhav are two much hyped people by BJP prior 2014. May be they are competent/good but perception one gets on news reports tell a different poor story so far..atleast on Kashmir,Naxal issues etc.
