“I bring this issue to you with much urgency as social media online platforms are instrumental in mobilizing and moulding of public opinion.” – he wrote gravely in his letter.

Ishakaran Singh Bhandari an advocate wrote a letter to Minister of Home Affairs Rajnath Singh on 28th Jan 2019 regarding the discriminatory and unfair practices by Twitter Inc which can prove to be a national security threat.

Ishakaran Singh is a commentator and has been involved in several high profile cases such as Asaram Bapu case and the National Herald case.

He suggested home ministry to constitute a committee to question the twitter officials the way is was done in the US  to ensure uniformity in their practices and impartiality.

In his letter, he explained how Twitter Inc has been targeting several individual accounts based on religious, ideological, political views and electoral interference. Although Twitter is a private enterprise it is not an ordinary one since it enjoys complete dominance and monopoly.

“I bring this issue to you with much urgency as social media online platforms are instrumental in mobilizing and moulding of public opinion.” – he wrote gravely in his letter.

Although it claims to be a platform for exchanging ideas and promoting diversity of thought it has been deliberately targeting individual accounts that do not subscribe to the leftist ideology. In his letter, he explains various discriminatory and unfair methods carried out by twitter to unfairly target the accounts that neither violates any of the guidelines/rules of the service. These accounts do not indulge in hateful speech yet are subjected to various kinds of suppression.

He adds that several users of the platform, all of whom hold patriotic views and speak favourably of the current government complain of such bias being evident across the platform.

He suggested home ministry to constitute a committee to question the twitter officials the way is was done in the US  to ensure uniformity in their practices and impartiality on the grounds of political, ideological, and religious preferences of Twitter users in the run-up to the assembly elections 2019.

He further requested for the policies to be framed in this direction. The letter is attached below for reference:
