IT Dept raids SP leader Rajeev Rai, other close aides of Akhilesh Yadav

The Income Tax Department conducted a raid at the Samajwadi Party leader Rajeev Rai, who is a close aide of Akhilesh Yadav. According to department sources, several raids were being conducted at various places in Uttar Pradesh. Apart from Rajeev Rai in Mau, the premises of RCL Group promoter Manoj Yadav in Mainpuri were also raided on Saturday morning.

Income Tax raids on Rajeev Rai have been carried out owing to suspicion of tax evasion. Rai is the legal owner of multiple other properties across Lucknow, Mainpuri, and Agra and I-T raids will most likely be conducted at those premises too.

Rajeev Rai is the national spokesperson of the Samajwadi Party. He is also the founder and chairman of AVK Group of Institutions, a chain of institutions in Bengaluru.

The raid has been going on since 7 am at the residence of Rai at Sahadatpura of Mau district. Searches at the residence of Manoj Yadav have been going on for more than two hours now.

The Samajwadi Party workers had gathered outside the National Secretary’s residence and raised objections upon learning of Income Tax raids. Subsequently, the area was cordoned off by Mau Police.

On the sidelines of the raid, Rajeev Rai said, “The government will make a case out of anything. “I have no criminal background or black money. I help people and the government did not like it. This is a result of that. If you do anything, then they will make a video, register an FIR and you will fight a case unnecessarily.”

Akhilesh Yadav reacted to the raids saying, “The BJP is going the same route as the Congress. Take a look at the old history of the Congress, whenever it had to intimidate someone, it would use these Central agencies. Today, the BJP is doing the same.”

  1. Such raids are necessary to clean the elections which often plagued with money politics and giving incentive (liquor, mutton) to disrupt & engage in unlawful activities during the voting times.
