God Save Tamil Nadu and the Hindus!
Keshava Dev, the legendary Malayalam novelist, wrote in one of his works that sex and devotion are the two biggest money spinners in India. Every temple in the country underscores the observation made by Dev while the red light areas in New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, and Bangalore endorse his views.
A veteran police officer in the country, who has the keys to some of the most guarded secret affairs that drive Indian politics, opened his mind to Team PGurus the other day.
The latest to hog the headlines was the Sree Agastheeswarar Temple at Nungambakkam in Chennai which is being sold by the present Trustee. Chances are that pilgrims visiting the Agastheeswarar Temple may end up praying either in a church or mosque. Thanks to a retired police officer by name Jebamani Mohanraj, the world came to know about the sale of the temple.
A veteran police officer in the country, who has the keys to some of the most guarded secret affairs that drive Indian politics, opened his mind to Team PGurus the other day. What prompted him to speak were the TV channel discussions on the missing temple lands and idols in Tamil Nadu. More than 50,000 acres of prime property owned by the temples have vanished without any trace. Similarly, more than 6,000 antique and ancient idols too have disappeared from the temples in Tamil Nadu.
“There is a definite pattern in the disappearance of these idols and the temple land. I do not see any antique value in most of these idols. They are just bronze statues which may command a few million dollars in the international market. But what is to be followed up is the forces behind the disappearance of these statues. It could be evangelists and proselytizers who are interested in seeing the closure of the temples,” said the officer who is well versed in intelligence gathering.
The officer did not want his name to be quoted in the report. He pointed out that once the idol disappears, the temple loses its life. “It leads to the closure of the temples. Now tell me who the beneficiaries of the closure of temples are?” he asked.
The Sabarimala controversy, the disappearing temple lands, and idols are all indications of forces working overtime to ensure the closure of the temples. “Along with the downing of shutters of temples, the heritage art forms connected to Hindutva too would disappear from the face of the earth,” said the officer.
Two incidents which should be remembered are the arrests of two HR & CE officialsin connection with the temple idol thefts.
We will reveal the name of the officer in due course. But what is more important is the latest development in Tamil Nadu, in which a group of Temple Idol Wing officials of the Crime Branch-Crime Investigation Department (CB-CID) submitted a memorandum against the Officer on Special Duty A G Pon Manickavel, the former Inspector General of Police who retired from service on November 30. But the Madras High Court which was pursuing the idol missing cases was so impressed by the performance of Manickavel that it ordered his continuation in service for one more year by which time he would arrest the culprits who stole the temple idols.
A week after the Madras High Court order in this regard, 13 police officers met Tamil Nadu’s Director General of Police (DGP) T K Rajendran and submitted a petition listing serious charges against Manickavel. The officers addressed the media with the blessings of the DGP and used the opportunity to lambast Manickavel. “This would not have taken place without official patronage,” said the veteran police officer.
Two incidents which should be remembered are the arrests of two HR & CE officials in connection with the temple idol thefts. For the first time in the history of Tamil Nadu Civil Service, officials of the HR & CE department protested against the arrests of their colleagues and described the same as the handiwork of the Sangh Parivar. The entire HR & CE staff staged dharnas across Tamil Nadu to protest the arrests.
“Both the AIADMK and the DMK do not want the police to expose the people who played a major role in flicking away the idols, temple pillars and walkways which have heavy stone inscriptions in them. The cat is out of the bag,” said Mohanraj, who has questioned the propriety of the police in not registering the cases.
While the police officers who met the DGP to submit their petitions complained that Manickavel was pressuring and instigating them to file First Information Reports (FIR) and arrest “innocent” persons, the man at the receiving end has something interesting to tell. “They are 21 persons who have not arrested a single accused or registered an FIR. All of them are good boys; somebody is instigating them. None of the officers who have complained gave me any representation for transfer in the last one-and-a-half-years either in the mail or in person.
The AIADMK is equally responsible like the DMK to jam-pack the HR & CE with officials amenable to their political masters.
“I am an officer appointed by the High Court now and confirmed by the Supreme Court… There are 700 personnel allotted by the court as support staff. They are not here to investigate; their task is only to support the Idol Wing, which has less strength. In the last year, we have registered 19 cases and recovered 17 idols. Forty-seven accused were arrested. All these were done by me with the help of a few constables,” said Manickavel.
There are no answers from the Tamil Nadu Government to the question why it was insisting on a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe despite the Madras High Court and Supreme Court expressing their satisfaction over the work being done by Pon Manickavel and his team. The AIADMK is equally responsible like the DMK to jam-pack the HR & CE with officials amenable to their political masters.
The behaviour of the police officials seeking transfer from the Idol Wing Department to other sections of the Police is an indicator to the direction in which the probe is progressing and what is awaiting Manickavel. The DMK, the AIADMK and all rationalist parties do not want the truth to come out. In another 50 years from now, the evangelists would have planted crosses atop all these temples and rename Mariamman as Mary Amma, Agastheewarar as St Augustine of Nungambakkam, Lord Ayyappa as Saint Iype of the west!
