One Nation, One Poll!!!

Implementation without Constitutional Amendment can lead to serious break-down in Governance

One Nation, One Poll
One Nation, One Poll

The fact is, in our federal structure of Government One Nation, One Poll appears to be impractical.

Call One Nation, One Poll a great initiative, a pipe dream, impossible for ground implementation.

Why is the present Government pushing for,”One Nation, One Poll“?

Look at it from a different perspective. It could be for short-term electoral gains, which may favour the ruling party at the Center and 11 States if the polls are held simultaneously. Or it could be a good thing for the country.

The fact is, in our federal structure of Government it appears to be impractical. It will require major Constitutional Amendment to put this into practice. As a long-term prospect, there is no doubt this will pave way for saving huge exchequer for the election which are held multiple times in Centre and State.

There seem to be too many loopholes that can create confusion in implementing the proposal.

The question that arises here is, what happens when there is no clear majority for a single party in the election and no consensus to form Government? In that situation, there will be a stalemate and re-election will be inevitable. Also when there is a coalition Government and in the middle, the term of the coalition partner pulls out of the and Government faces “No Confidence”. Another aspect is that the Nation’s Prime Minister and the State Chief Minister is indirectly selected by the elected Member of Parliament. In case the leader loses the confidence of his supporters in-between, it can create Constitutional crises.

The only possible and practical way is electing the Nation’s Prime Minister and State’s Chief Minister directly as done in the United States. The leading candidate of the respective party will be announced prior to the election. The candidate will be fixed for the term of 5 years and should get a vital majority of 50%. In case of shortfall in getting the desired majority of 50% votes, the top 2 candidates who are able and deserving will again have a run-off election within 15 days. The person who garners majority votes among them will be declared elected.  This format is suitable, but with our present Government structure, it looks like a distant dream.

There seem to be too many loopholes that can create confusion in implementing the proposal.

To formulate a strong “One Nation, One Poll” we first have to determine fixed terms for the Parliament & State Assembly and under no circumstances re-election is possible. Rewriting our Constitution with a clarity of rules & regulations in this regard will be crucial. One Should keep in mind we are a Democracy and in the end, people rule.

Implementation without Constitutional Amendment can lead to serious break-down in Governance…

  1. Think other way why we should have so many political party. Make only maximum three parties. I remember when I was a child in 1960 elections were held simultaneously.later on we have so many times the state assemblies were dismissed and this chaos started. Let the public raise this issue and create an atmosphere for simultaneous election
    We can save huge expenditure.
