A joint team of security forces Thursday morning eliminated four Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) terrorists after intercepting a truck in which they were traveling near Ban Toll Plaza on the Jammu Srinagar National Highway.

Two jawans of the special operations group of Jammu and Kashmir police also received injuries and were undergoing treatment in the Government Medical College hospital in Jammu. Their condition was stated to be stable.

Director-General of Police Dilbagh Singh said, “by successfully eliminating all four terrorists of Jaish-e-Mohammad terrorist outfit we have foiled an attempt made by the Pakistan based terrorist outfits to sabotage peaceful conduct of District Development Council (DDC) polls beginning Nov 28 in Jammu and Kashmir.”

He said they were receiving regular inputs about the possible infiltration bids from across the International border. The group of terrorists infiltrated via the International border and were moving towards Kashmir valley in a truck.” He further said the security checkpoints were alerted and conducting thorough searches along the highway.

Earlier on January 31, 2020, three terrorists were gunned down by the security forces while they were moving towards Kashmir valley and were intercepted by the security forces in a similar manner.

Addressing a press conference in Jammu Inspector General of Police, Jammu range Mukesh Singh said, “the gunfight erupted at around 5.00 am when a truck moving towards Srinagar was intercepted by the security forces at one of the security checkpoints near Ban Toll Plaza.”

He said, “when the truck driver could not give satisfactory replies the security personnel stationed at the toll plaza started checking the truck. Around the same time, the terrorists hiding inside the truck lobbed a grenade and opened indiscriminate firing leading to a fierce gunfight.”

11 AK rifles, 29 grenades, 3 kgs RDX, radio, mobile handsets

“In the ensuing firefight, the security forces neutralized all four of them, he added. IGP, Jammu said huge quantities of arms and ammunition have been recovered from the truck. We have recovered 11 AK rifles from the truck, 29 grenades, 3kgs RDX, mobile phone handsets, radio sets, medicines, ration supplies, etc, he added. Mukesh Singh said the terrorists had infiltrated to launch a big strike inside the Indian territory in the coming days. He said the police are going to thoroughly investigate how these terrorists entered inside the Indian territory and who were assisting them to execute their sinister designs.

Meanwhile, the vehicular movement on the national highway was halted after the firing started early morning around 5.00 am.

A large number of passenger vehicles heading towards Kashmir valley remained stranded till late afternoon as the entire area was being sanitized along the national highway. The traffic was allowed only after the entire area was sanitized and cleared of explosives material scattered at the encounter site after 11.00 am.

Preliminary investigations so far revealed the registration number Jk01AL 1055 was fake. This number is registered in the name of a goods carrier in the office of RTO, Srinagar. According to the official sources, the truck passed through a toll plaza in Samba district around 3.44 am.
