  • The ‘paper tigers’ of Hurriyat Conference involved in money laundering to fuel unrest in Kashmir valley were finally put behind the bars by the National Investigating Agency on Monday
  • The crack down even took the state government headed by Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti by surprise as NIA had kept it a tightly guarded secret until the last moment
  • The swift operation to arrest the separatist leaders was launched early morning but the final arrests were made late in the afternoon

To prevent any back lash in response to their arrest NIA authorities airlifted arrested persons to New Delhi where their medical examination was conducted at the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital. They are likely to be produced before the special judge, Patiala House on Tuesday.

Soon after the news of the arrest of seven Hurriyat Conference leaders was aired on TV news channels prominent Hurriyat Conference leaders went into a huddle to chalk out their future course of action.

According to written statement issued by the National Investigating Agency, “a total number of seven (07) persons were arrested in connection with the NIA Case No. RC-10/2017/NIA/DLI (J&K Terror Funding Case) under sections 120B, 121, 121A of IPC and sections 13, 16, 17, 18, 20, 38, 39, 40 of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967.

NIA swoops in to take 7 Hurriyat leaders into custody

NIA said, “Altaf Ahmad Shah Funtoosh Geelani, Ayaz Akbar Khandey, Raja Mehrajuddin Kalwal, Peer Saifullah, Aftab Hilali Shah @ Shahid-ul-Islam, Nayeem Khan were arrested in Srinagar and Farooq Ahmad Dar @ Bitta Karate was arrested in New Delhi.

Shah is the son-in-law of Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Geelani and Islam is a close aide and media advisor of Hurriyat leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq. Akbar is the spokesperson for the Geelani-led Hurriyat.

The Geelani-led Hurriyat had earlier suspended Nayeem Khan after his alleged confession of receiving funds in a TV sting operation.

The NIA had registered the instant case on 30.05.2017 against the separatist and secessionist leaders, including the members/cadres of the Hurriyat Conference, who have been acting in connivance with active militants of proscribed terrorist organizations Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM), Dukhtarane Millat, Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) and other terrorist organizations/associations and gangs for raising, receiving and collecting funds through various illegal means, including hawala, for funding separatist and terrorist activities in Jammu and Kashmir and for causing disruption in Kashmir Valley by way of pelting stones on the security forces, burning schools, damaging public property and waging war against India.

In pursuance of this FIR, the National Investigation Agency had conducted widespread searches on the suspected persons in Jammu and Kashmir, Delhi and Haryana and incriminating documents, electronic devices, cash and other valuables worth crores were unearthed during those searches even Kashmiri separatist leaders on charges of receiving funds from abroad to sponsor stone-pelting protests in the Kashmir Valley.

Shut down call given by separatists leaders?

Soon after the news of the arrest of seven Hurriyat Conference leaders was aired on TV news channels prominent Hurriyat Conference leaders went into a huddle to chalk out their future course of action.

It is a fact that these leaders were reading the writing on the wall as rumors were floating in the corridors of power for a long time that the NIA had completed preliminary investigations in the case and likely to arrest these leaders.

After holding deliberations Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) Monday issued a shutdown call across Kashmir Valley on Tuesday to protest the arrest of Hurriyat leaders by the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

“JRL comprising Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, and Mohammad Yasin Malik have given a call for complete strike tomorrow to protest and condemn the “revengeful, arbitrary and illegal arrests of Hurriyat leaders Altaf Ahmed Shah, Shahidul Islam, Ayaz Akbar, Mehrajuddin Kalwal and Peer Saifullah by NIA in Srinagar today,” said a spokesman.

In view of the shutdown call, the state police have beefed up security in downtown areas of Srinagar, the pocket borough of separatists to prevent any flare of tension during street protests.

Terrorism in Kashmir will not end till the time India and Pakistan initiate talks: Dr Farooq Abdullah

Former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Farooq Abdullah, Monday said that NIA arrest of Hurriyat leader Naeem Khan, Bitta Karate among seven others in connection with Pakistan terror funding case will reveal the extent of their involvement in influencing terror activities in Kashmir.

“Even we’d get to see the extent of their involvement. Everyone in the Valley will get to know from where the money came and how was it put to use,” Abdullah said.

Abdullah added that terrorism in Kashmir will not end till the time India and Pakistan initiate talks with each other.”It’s not required that the prime minister be the one to talk every time. I suggest that a parliamentary delegation can be sent to Pakistan. Manmohan Singh, former prime minister, Mulayam Singh Yadav and others can be sent to initiate talks with Pakistani parliamentarians,” added Abdullah.

  1. The action taken by NIA against Hurriyat terror supporters is appropriate though belated but to call them PAPER TIGERS is wrong. Certainly these obnoxious human, anti Indian traitors are not as harmless as PAPER TIGERS.
They are dangerous/dirty HYENAS capable of sleazy attacks w/o warning,to their advantage& can side with the enemy without hesitation. They must be dealt with mercilessly.
