US Congressman Pete Olson appreciated India for the abrogation of Article 370 which gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir. He said that for seven decades, the “temporary” provision forced people there to live under different laws than all other Indians.

Article 370 of the Indian constitution which gave special status to the erstwhile state of Jammu Kashmir was abrogated by the Indian parliament in August this year. The decision to bifurcate the state into two Union Territories was also announced simultaneously.

Olson explained in the US House of Representatives that doing away with the “temporary provision” gave the same rights to the people of Jammu and Kashmir as all other Indians.[1]

Praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi Congressman Olson said tweeting a 90-second video of his speech that “Today I spoke on the House floor to stand with India and Prime Minister @narendramodi as he works to bring peace to the region, expand democracy and unite the people of #JammuAndKashmir with the greater Indian community.”

Olson represents TX-22 (Texas’ 22nd Congressional district) according to his Twitter handle.

Olson said, “This year, the Indian parliament confirmed that Article 370‘s temporary status should end. It ended. It gave the people of Jammu Kashmir the same rights as all Indians,” recalling the special treatment given to the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir in the Indian constitution,

“For 70 years, this temporary law forced the citizens of Jammu and Kashmir to live under different laws than all other Indians, different rules for citizenship, property ownership,” he said.[2]

The Congressman also reminded the US House of Representatives about the overwhelming majority with which the Indian Parliament approved the abrogation of Article 370 and expressed hope that this will be a step for peace in Kashmir.

This action puts equality for all Indians, said Olson.
