The gunning down of Gauri Lankesh is most condemnable. One might disagree with her views. But instead of countering her in a democratic way, her opponents have got her brutally killed; an act which has no place in a civilized society. Earlier rationalists like Dhabolkar and Kalburgi were similarly killed. They did provoke the ire of Hindus by ridiculing religious practices in the name of rationalism. What particularly irked Hindus was that these activists did not do anything to expose superstitions in other religions like Islam and Christianity. Of course, their irritatingly selective approach was no justification for their killing. But, their anti-Hindu bias has got to be factored in in any debate on the serial killings.
The Press Club of India, which is a hotbed of anti-Modism, promptly convened a meeting today to protest the “attack on freedom of expression.” But, it maintained a steady silence when the management of the venerable pro-left Economic and Political Weekly effectively and in a most undemocratic manner sacked its highly-respected editor, Paranjoy Guha Thakurta, for exposing the Adani Group.
What is despicable is the cynical exploitation of these murders by the SOB (Selective Outrage Brigade) which has a pathological hatred towards the Sangh Parivar in general and Narendra Modi (NaMo) in particular. The SOB pounces on every little opportunity to mobilize public opinion against NaMo and the Sangh Parivar. The current tragedy of India is that if you utter a word in praise of NaMo for some genuinely good work done by him you are promptly labeled a ‘chaddiwala’ and if you support the struggle of impoverished tribals for land rights you are quickly dubbed a Naxalite. It is this simplistic either-or syndrome which is harmful to democratic debate.
And what is most unfortunate is the fact the mainstream media is being held hostage by SOB. Within minutes of Gauri’s assassination, a senior journalist blamed the RSS in his tweet.

One of the prominent members of SOB is lawyer Prashant Bhushan, who openly advocates so-called self-determination for Kashmiri Muslims and who pleaded one of the cases of Bengaluru serial bomb blast terror accused, Abdul Nasser Madani, in the Supreme Court.
The SOB kept mum when a Prof K.T. Joseph of Kerala had his hand cut by Islamists who were upset with a question paper set by him. The actions of the fundamentalist PDF Kerala and neighboring states should have caused deep concern among all right thinking citizens. But, the SOB chooses to behave like an ostrich.
I, for one, suspect that the killing of Gauri is the handiwork of the fundamentalist anti-Modi lobby, with possible links to external agencies, which is trying every trick in the book to unseat NaMo.
The talk of Hindu terror failed miserably with the truth about Lt. Col Purohit coming out in the open. Hence, soft targets like Gauri Lankesh are being felled to create an anti-Modi hysteria in the country.

Bala, please annotate above statement explaining why Lakesh’s killing is condemnable? Otherwise, there would be questions raised as to why Burhan Wani killing is not condemnable but Lankesh killing is? In my view, given her extremist/violent leftists’ ideology, her criminal background (she was convicted by the court) & also given her being on the same side as her anti-national ‘children’ Kanhaiya and Khalid, she was no different than terrorist Wani (only the modus operandi was different). But to punish a terrorist is the job of law enforcing agencies and certainly not left to individuals or groups. The condemnable part about her killing is that she was not punished by the law enforcing agencies but by some rogue leftists terrorist group (In a way her killing is akin to Mumbai gang wars where one gang say Rajan gang would kill people from other gang say Dawood and vice versa). She should have been prosecuted and brought to justice. The punishment had to come from the Courts, not individuals. This is the only condemnable part. please amend your statement above
