[dropcap color=”#008040″ boxed=”yes” boxed_radius=”8px” class=”” id=””]M[/dropcap]ukul Rohatgi’s tenure as Attorney General (AG) ends today with a new AG set to be announced next week. It is widely believed that Harsh Salve, the Supreme Court lawyer who successfully argued the Kulbhushan Yadav case in the International Court of Justice is a strong contender for this prestigious post.
…Senior BJP leader Dr. Subramanian Swamy had recalled that the AG upsets many of the judges in the Supreme Court with his behavior.
Rohatgi has been in the eye of one controversy after other. The last one, a move that could be termed as a conflict of interest, the AG issued a doubtful legal opinion to Communist Party of India – Marxist (CPM) ruled Kerala State on how to save the liquor lobby from the Supreme Court’s (SC) ban on bars near the National Highways. The upshot of this opinion was that Kerala has downgraded many highways to make them not come under the SC ruling.
In another baffling move, which could have been interpreted as a case of Bad Optics for India’s the top Law Officer of the country, based on the travel manifest sourced by PGurus, Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi traveled with Rajeev Agarwal on December 20, 2014 in Emirates flight (EK 511) from Delhi to Dubai. According to eyewitnesses, Delhi’s Customs Commissioner and top officials escorted the Attorney General and his controversial friend cum client caught for smuggling from Airport entrance to Aircraft! Rohatgi’s seat number was 2E and Agarwal was in the adjacent seat 2F.
In this video conversation with Sudarshan TV Channel, Senior BJP leader Dr. Subramanian Swamy had recalled that the AG upsets many of the judges in the Supreme Court with his behavior. He quoted the instance of how Rohatgi tried to implicate him on a book that he wrote in 2006 and it was finally dropped at the insistence of Modi.
Will this cause a domino effect with more acolytes of the AG also departing (or being gently eased out)? Wait and watch!
