Same newspaper, same news, 2 cities, 2 headlines!

A regrettable instance of the same news being cast in a questionable light by one edition of a national newspaper

A regrettable instance of the same news being cast in a questionable light by one edition of a national newspaper

This post is a follow-up to our post “National daily” argues there were no anti-national elements! describing the distortion of news. Take a close look at the following 2 graphics:

New Indian Express article in its Chennai edition
New Indian Express article in its Madurai edition

  1. The content in both the posts is near identical.

  2. The headline in the Chennai edition says the Chief Minister says… This is the statement the Chief Minister gave in the floor of the assembly, which essentially is a fact.

  3. The headline in the Madurai edition says the Chief Minister claims… How can a statement the Chief Minister gave in the floor of the assembly, which essentially is a fact, be characterized as a claim?

  4. In this jet age, where people have an attention span of 8.25 seconds, they tend to glance at the headlines before spending the time to read the post. This mischief flies in the face of ethics in journalism.

The following day, the S George, IPS, Commissioner of Police imposed 144 of the code of Criminal Procedure, 1973 on sections in and around the Marina Beach. The entire copy of the order is reproduced below. We would like to point our readers to Section 2, which explains the reason behind this:

And Whereas, there is reason to believe that even after their demands were fulfilled by the Government of Tamil Nadu, anti-socials, anti-nationals and miscreants are trying to spread rumours through the social media, inviting the students and others to congregate in large numbers in the Marina and Foreshore areas by spreading their ideologies against the interest of the Nation and State and may again incite or lead acts of violence, mischief and rioting, that would affect the peace and tranquility of the citizens and would also pave way for damage of public properties.

This shows that Police had proof of impending trouble in the days to come and are acting proactively to prevent it.

Jallikattu in Supreme Court on Monday

So how is the new law passed in the Tamil Nadu assembly going to play out? It is entirely possible that it could get stayed in the Supreme Court. Which means there is going to be a wait till clarity emerges. Patience is the order of the day. It maybe coming up as soon as today (Monday the 30th) in front of the Supreme Court. Wait and hope that justice will be done. You do have one the best legal minds in India on your side. It is important to remember that the law must be respected at all costs.

  1. How can the Supreme Court stay the operation of a law validly enacted by a competent legislature and duly given the President’s consent even if its constitutionliity is questioned? The law should be deemed to be infra vires of the constitution until and unless it is reviewed by the constitutional bench of the Supreme Court and held to be ultra vires of the constitution. I submit that the Supreme Court would be overreaching its authority if it attempts to stay the operation of the law.

  2. You can find that so called vehicle with Bin laden poster in social media and it is registered to RSS leader and the person who rides the vehicle is a ABVP member. Probably CM fell in this trap. This needs a thorough investigation and the ppl who rides the vehicle should be punished.

  3. ” How can a statement the Chief Minister gave in the floor of the assembly, which essentially is a fact, be characterized as a claim?” – really can’t understand the logic. So whatever a CM says in the assemble will be a “fact”? What great logic!! With just one sticker in a scooter how can anyone discredit a protest in which thousands participated? The news paper is right is indicating that the CM’s statement is dubious by using the word “claimed” in the headline.

  4. This is how peole with vested interestes like Sundan Mohan spread Lies without any proof to instigate voilence.so please be beware of such people whoes only intention is 2 devide India on Communal agenda …
