Should Tirumala temple be declared a heritage site under Archaeological Survey of India?

One thing is obvious with the behavior of Andhra political administration; they are not interested in reviving temples or protecting them.

Should Tirumala temple be declared a heritage site under Archaeological Survey of India?
Should Tirumala temple be declared a heritage site under Archaeological Survey of India?

It is crucial to analyze, what is bothering the Andhra government as well as the Telugu Media if the Tirumala and its surrounding temples are taken over by the ASI?

Given the circumstances, it is imperative to have a monitoring system that oversees the modifications that may be performed in the future on Tirumala, Tirupati and other surrounding temples. Most of these temples are at least 500 years old. In 2010 there were attempts to put a gold plating on top of the temple walls. During that time, several sadhus and pandits resisted this modification, the court had to intervene and thus the effort to put gold plating halted. There are many inscriptions on the walls by our ancestors. If the gold plating is implemented then many of those inscriptions will simply be erased or tampered. Has anyone ever tried to analyze those writings on the temple walls? If so what information our ancestors wanted to pass on?

The main job of the state hired journalists is to monitor all state media and suppress the honest voices using any possible means.

In 2003, the prestigious famous “Veyi Kalla Mandapam (Thousand legs Shelter)” made of ancient rocks and of high architectural expertise was demolished by then “Chandra Babu Naidu’s” administration. He has ignored many concerns of both public and pandits. He even violated several laws of “Ancient Monuments and Archeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958”. A lot of archaeological evidence and the ancient artwork was destroyed due to political egos and poor decisions by the government.

A couple of weeks ago, a letter appeared to be from the Archeological Survey of India (ASI) was circulated widely in Telugu Media. It was addressed to TTD and wanted to survey the Tirumala temple and temples around Tirumala. The entire Telugu media who was never interested in Hindus or Hindu temples started broadcasting news scaring people that the centre is trying to take over temples in Tirumala. In no time another letter from ASI appeared cancelling the previous request.

What is making Telugu media go Hyper? In 2016 Andhra government hired 25 journalists for public relations management. Chandra Babu Naidu administration had passed an order and brought those journalists on a government payroll. Allegedly the main job of these state hired journalists is to monitor all state media and suppress the honest voices using any possible means. The same gang of journalists are seeming to be behind this sudden media outcry on ASI decision.

It is crucial to analyze and understand, what is bothering the Andhra government as well as the Telugu Media if the Tirumala and its surrounding temples are taken over by the ASI? Why are they so much worried? ASI is a prestigious department which has always focused on protecting the ancient structures, sculptures. The department has so far never interfered with the administration of the state. In fact, it is a great move; if ASI takes Tirumala temple, then it becomes difficult to tamper with the temple and its related structures. The temple will still be under state administration and the state can continue the abuse of temple funds. Then why the media in Andhra are making it a big issue and misleading the public? Is there a bigger plot behind? Is there any plan that someone wants to modify or change or denigrate the temple structures on purpose? Lately, Tirupati and Tirumala temples are being attacked in various angles by Christian missionaries and Islamists. There is an ongoing effort from Christians and Islamists who want to destroy the dignity of Tirumala & Tirupati temples? Have they feared that they will not be able to implement their plan once the temple goes under the protection of ASI? or are there any secret chambers like Padmanabhan swami Temple in Kerala? Any hidden wealth inside the temple?

Tirumala’s or TTD’s treasure can be used wisely for saving several small temples around Tirumala and Tirupati.

Strong rumours were circulating that the Lord Venkateshwara’s gold and diamond ornaments worth approximately about 3 lakh cores rupees have been tampered with. Many know that popular pujaris such as Dollar Shephard are directly involved with the ornaments. These and many other government officials must be enquired by CBI to verify if such tampering has occurred, if so, on whose instruction. Have they only tampered the ornaments or did they replace them with other similar designs? Rumours speculate that most of the ancient precious ornaments took the Italian/Vatican route during UPA regime.

Even during centuries of Islamic/Mughal and Christian/British rule, there was not a single rupee of Tirumala’s temple assets touched. Sadly, during our “Secular Hindu rule,” Lord Venkateshwara’s jewellery and the related gold allegedly is tampered with.

Andhra government is sucking thousands of crores of money out of T.T.D and using that money for their political gains and secular purposes. In a TV debate, Mr Ratan Sharda quoted that 85% of 3100 crores from Tirumala used for state schemes. TTD’s treasure can be used wisely for saving several small temples around Tirumala and Tirupati. When an activist asked TTD to revive a local temple, TTD declined to take over any temple that is in poor condition. Also, the Andhra administration seems to be not interested in protecting the temple unless that temple is making money. One thing is obvious with the behaviour of Andhra political administration; they are not interested in reviving temples or protecting them. They only care about retaining their political power and for that, they use temple money.

  1. If the ASI can form a body of pandits, sadhus, and brahmin scholars who can take charge of these sacred places, then the move will be a success.
I was recently at MahaParinibbana Stupa in Kushinagar which is an ASI protected heritage site. The Digha Nikaya sutta states that people visiting such sacred sights will be filled with devotion in the dhamma. The site serves a purpose of renewing a feeling of ‘purpose’ in the lives of people. On the contrary, they have become dormant archaeological places of interest which fail to convey the purpose of their existence to the lay people.
Only if these sacred places can be ‘maintained’ in the way they are supposed to be (as mentioned in Vedic texts for temples) will we benefit from their presence. Else, we will just witness a tremendous death of a living cultural and sacred heritage which is of a divine nature.

  2. I pray to lord that this spreads like wildfire to every part of world. Naidu, the no-doer marketer need to get the stick not only from people but also from almighty. Ever since i heard the news from chief priest of TTD, my stomach started churning. Here is a CM, a fox wraped in a cloth of goat, marketing he is doing good for Andhra is swindling money from temples. I am sure he would have swindled a lot of money for building capital and now he is playing the game of fasting for special status and all.
Lord venkateshwara, please finish off these evil forces in such a way that no one in future should even think of touching your hundi for bad purposes. Time for respected swamy to step in, again and again.

  3. Yes the temple’s excess funds can be used to develop other temples which do not have much funds. This can be used to provide Archakas in poverty and their wards can be provided with both Vedic and Modern Education.

  4. I respect Sri Iyer and PGURUS view. Kindly do not even utter this word – Archaeology. They are expert in conducting Museum. Tirupati temple is a museum and it is a live divine on earthy. They do not know Agama Sastra. The temple should be given to a spiritual trust headed by the previous Mutt’s Management. But now, they should have a committee comprising of all Vedic beliefs like Advaidta, Dwaita and Visitatviaida (Panchararthra) representatives under the permanent leadership of Vaikanasa Akama, which is the traditional pooja SOS of the temple. Archeology will make this as museum. I am sure Lord Balaji will never let this to happen. Please share this view to Dr Swamy, Rajiv Malhotra… They would be able to explain this much better.

  5. Media should not interfere in Hindu temples affairs…
What do they do to bring in churches n mosques under govt?

  6. If Chandra Babu Naidu has really tampered with Venkateswara then he is sure to face the consequences.
God knows to save himself but he is not present in tirumala alone… He just wants to check how many care for his temple. And the number is definitely large.

    • It is not only Naidu, YSR also did the same. He ensured that Christian Machinery is active in the temple town. There were roomers that they tried either to convert the TTD employees to Christianity or employed those men in TTD positions. I know someone, a Christian, a retired employee of TTD.
