Subramanian Swamy urges replacing words of ‘Jana Gana Mana’ with Netaji’s INA version

Subhash Chandra Bose replaced with some words to make the song a victorious song

Raking up a longstanding demand, BJP leader Subramanian Swamy urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to replace the wording in the National Anthem ‘Jana Gana Mana’ with the ‘Jana Gana Mana’ composed and sung by the Indian National Army (INA) of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose in 1943. In his two-page letter, Swamy said this was an assurance given by President Dr. Rajendra Prasad in the Constituent Assembly in 1949.

“This letter is to bring to your notice an outstanding demand for patriots who fought and sacrificed for India’s independence from British imperialists rule. It is also a demand of an overwhelming majority of the youth of India, that some of the words in the National Anthem ‘Jana Gana Mana’ be replaced by the words in the ‘Jana Gana Mana’ composed and sung by the Indian National Army (INA), on the occasion of Declaration of India’s Independence on October 21, 1943, after Subhash Chandra Bose-led capture of Imphal, the capital of Manipur. The present wording in the National Anthem of ‘Jana Gana Mana’ has words used by Rabindra Nath Tagore some of which raise unnecessary doubts about to whom the poem was addressed. It is also inappropriate for post-1947 Independent India – for example, the reference to Sind is in the words of the National Anthem. Hence the words of the ‘Jana Gana Mana’ prepared in the direction of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, for INA, is the most appropriate for Independent India.

Rabindra Nath Tagore’s ‘Jana Gana Mana’ was facing controversies that it was a welcome song to praise King George V in 1911 when he landed in India. The word “Adhinayak’ was the term to praise him and many argued that this should be changed.

“You may also know that the as President of Constituent Assembly, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, in his concluding remarks on November 26, 1949, had declared that ‘Jana Gana Mana’ (and ‘Vande Mataram’) are of equal status as National Anthem. But Dr. Prasad added that the words in the ‘Jana Gana Mana’ may be amended or replaced in the future with other appropriate words. Hence the permission to amend the words of the ‘Jana Gana Mana’ has been made part of the proceedings of the Constituent Assembly.

“Hence there is no bar to replacing some of the words in ‘Jana Gana Mana’. I hope it is possible therefore that they January 26, 2021, the government will carry out the necessary changes by replacing the present ‘Jana Gana Mana’ wordings with that bequeathed by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose on October 21, 1943, the day when the British imperialist troops were evicted by the INA from being a part of Indian territory, namely Manipur,” said Subramanian Swamy.

Rabindra Nath Tagore’s ‘Jana Gana Mana’ was facing controversies that it was a welcome song to praise King George V in 1911 when he landed in India. The word “Adhinayak’ was the term to praise him and many argued that this should be changed. Moreover ‘Sind’ is not a part of India now. In 1943, Subhash Chandra Bose replaced with some words to make the song a victorious song.

This was the song replaced by Netaji in 1943:

The lyrics of Netaji’s INA song is as given below:

Subh sukh chain ki barkha barse, Bharat bhaag hai jaaga.
Punjab, Sindh, Gujarat, Maratha, Dravid, Utkal, Banga,
Chanchal sagar, Vindhya, Himalaya, Neela Jamuna, Ganga.
Tere nit gun gaayen, Tujhse jivan paayen,
Har tan paaye asha.
Suraj ban kar jag par chamke, Bharat naam subhaga,
Jai Ho! Jai Ho! Jai Ho! Jai, Jai, Jai, Jai Ho!

  • Completely support Dr Swamy on this. Sindh should be dropped. Dravida should be 'Dakshina' (more inclusive) and 'uttar purbanchal' bharat (northeast india) and river Brahmaputra should be added as it was not mentioned in the original version as well by Tagore. This will become the true national anthem.

  • We should replace Dravida with Dakshina , only then it can refer to the entire south India. Dravida means where the 3 seas meet and only Tamil Nadu is the place where they meet , but not other states. As for Sindh, since it is not a part of India, must be replaced as well. We can re - replace it if Sindh becomes a part of India in the future. But until then it should be replaced with something else , maybe terms refering to northeast India or Kashmir.

  • First of all Tagore himself has categorically clarified the matter.
The poet claims in a letter written in 1939: "I should only insult myself if I cared to answer those who consider me capable of such unbounded stupidity."[17] In another letter to Pulin Behari Sen, Tagore later wrote, "A certain high official in His Majesty's service, who was also my friend, had requested that I write a song of felicitation towards the Emperor. The request simply amazed me. It caused a great stir in my heart. In response to that great mental turmoil, I pronounced the victory in Jana Gana Mana of that Bhagya Vidhata (ed. God of Destiny) of India who has from age after age held steadfast the reins of India's chariot through rise and fall, through the straight path and the curved. That Lord of Destiny, that Reader of the Collective Mind of India, that Perennial Guide, could never be George V, George VI, or any other George. Even my official friend understood this about the song. After all, even if his admiration for the crown was excessive, he was not lacking in simple common sense."[18]

Secondly, the full version of the song is here, which should set all doubt to rest. The mention of the charioteer in Stanza 3 points more to Krishna. (unless of course you claim that King George came here in a chariot!!)

Yes, perhaps the 'Sindhu' may be replaced by Kaveri (or 'Ponni') because the only grievance perhaps with the anthem is that all that is below the Vindhyas seem to be ignored, except for the single term 'Dravida'.

  • No doubt the original song as written to welcome the King Grorge V but still continued as our national anthem which needs to be changed. Even if Adhinayak word is removed still Sindh would remain showing geographical distortion. But parochialusmvwould be unleashed by the narrow minded regional parties to direct anger against the Central Govt as is being done by every state.

  • We absolutely agree with Dr. S. Swamy. Netaji was the only biggest and Real patriot of India we know since our Child hood. But because the India's fate went into hands of criminal, sex offender lootera BLACK BRITISH the " British Kale Kutta" called Nehru, all our vision of true free India post British was lost and the Country was disintegrated so badly under the communists and Muslim terrorists and their Rich agents like Nizam in Hyderabad. Modi is trying hard but he too has limitations. We ask Dr Swamy to bring a Bill / Private bill after convincing the President R.N. Kovind as per assurance of Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the bill can be passed in both Houses.
Tagore was a "British Taloa Chatnewala" just to get his Nobel prize. That is why he sang himself to welcome of George-V in Kolkata before 1912. His Nobel nomination was discarded before 1912 being Hindu. In fact after that Tagore chose halfway to Christianity from Hinduism to "BRAMBHA Dharma", he got his Nobel Prize. . That was the tradition to lick with butter the back bottom of White British in India to get access to London and elsewhere in Britain. Bengalis are famous for that even today. One can see most Radical Bengalis background and contribution in today's India. They al are communists or crooked Congress leaders.
Dr swamy must take the lead in this matter, there will be Millions who would support him through social media communications.

  • There is absolutely no doubt the words used by the traitor Rabindra Nath Tagore address the thief George V
This traitor was bestowed with Nobel in return for his SERVILITY & BOOT LICKING
Center should immediately replace our current Anthem with the one suggested by Dr. Swamy.
