Swamy rocks Rajya Sabha. Congress switches to Defense

Forced to play defense, Congress and the Left are running helter-skelter as Swamy ups the ante

[dropcap color=”#008040″ boxed=”yes” boxed_radius=”8px” class=”” id=””]W[/dropcap]ithin three days of his entry, Subramanian Swamy has turned the tables in Rajya Sabha, where the agenda till now was dictated by Congress and the Left. On his second day – April the 27th, in his very first speech, he created tremors in the Congress leadership. Unlike others, he did not shy away from naming Sonia Gandhi in the Agusta Westland deal.

Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs rightly cautioned the Congress MPs – “Don’t play with Swamy. He is a headmaster of the school where you were taught tricks”. The next day too, the irrepressible Swamy stood up in the House and provoked Congress by reminding the Chair about his new notice for a debate on the Chopper scandal, by bringing out the expose of Six million Euros spent on managing Indian media by the company.

Sensing danger, Deputy Chairman P J Kurien said that the decision on allowing a debate will be taken by the Chairman of the House, Vice President Hamid Ansari. All thought that the issue was over. But Swamy got a lucky break. Another MP referred Swamy’s name during his speech on maintaining minority status to Aligarh Muslim University. Sensing an opportunity, the quick-footed Swamy stood up and demanded to make a clarification as his name was mentioned.

Swamy made it clear by quoting that under the Indian Constitution, the government cannot fund minority institution and that the University being a Central University has to abide by the rules, just like the others. Someone from Congress side committed a blunder by trying to tease Swamy by questioning the provision he quoted from Indian Constitution. Swamy shot back: “I am talking about Indian Constitution. Not Italian. You, people, know only Italian constitution.”

[dropcap color=”#008040″ boxed=”yes” boxed_radius=”8px” class=”” id=””]T[/dropcap]he agitated Congress was instantly on its feet and flooded the well of the house. They started calling Swamy a CIA agent to which he shot back calling them as ISI and KGB agents. Opposition Leader Ghulam Nabi Azad then went on a tirade against Swamy. He said Swamy was using street language and termed him as BJP’s new gift to spoil the Parliament procedures.

Kurien managed to make Swamy sit down but not before he challenged the expunging of his use of words Sonia and Italian.

On Friday, April 29th, Swamy gave a jolt to Azad by filing a Privilege Notice accusing him of lying in the House on the blacklisting of a Chopper company. Records indicate that the Blacklisting of AgustaWestland was done by the NDA government on 3rd July, 2014.

After Swamy’s entry, the Congress which was playing offense is now forced to play defense. Every time Swamy stands up to make a speech, Congress indulges in juvenile-like behavior, trying to shout him down. The house witnessed on Friday the Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, who wanted his petition to be taken up but he could not remember under what section he had filed it! The attached video says it all. Congress which had planned to attack Government is now forced to counter Swamy’s allegations against party’s Chief Sonia. The fact that Sonia and Ahmed Patel are giving interviews and sound bytes to all and sundry is indicative of how serious the AgustaWestland case is.

One thing is sure. Swamy’s entry has energized the BJP. He has changed the agenda of the House and shown how to tackle Sonia Gandhi and her family members. The Lutyen’s cocktail party leaders have been put on notice. For the past decade, no one in BJP in Parliament dared lock horns with the Gandhi family. The BJP leadership in Parliament kept quiet for more than year on Vadra land grabbing cases, first exposed in March 2011.

Rajya Sabha will be debating next Wednesday (May 4th) on the Chopper Scam. It might be one of the most important debates yet as Swamy will be making some interesting revelations. Rajya Sabha TV ratings are going to go through the roof.

  1. Swamy rocks. I only hope he gets a fair hearing and decisions in NH and Augusta if it gets filed. Some of the big honchos need to go to jail for the people to understand that finally there is a change in the system…. If not its same as usual n the people will lose hope

  2. Absolutely!! Mr Swamy is a firebrand. He is very knowledgeable, intelligent, up to date and quick on his feet. His articulation is beyond compare. I like him very much.
