Swamy tweets to Amit Shah that he should ask VP to remove Chidambaram from Standing Committee for Home Affairs

Dr. Swamy suggests that Shah should ask the Vice President to remove Chidambaram from the Standing Committee for Home Affairs

Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Dr. Subramanain Swamy upped the ante in his fight against the former Finance Minister P Chidambaram, demanding that the Vice President of India remove Chidambaram from the Chairmanship of Standing Committee of Parliament for Home Affairs. Responding to a tweet, Dr. Swamy made this comment.

Swamy had written to the then Vice President and the Speaker of Lok Sabha in October 2016.

Conflict of Interest

In two separate complaints to the LS Speaker Sumitra Mahajan and RS Chairperson Hamid Ansari, Swamy said Chidambaram cannot continue as Chairman of the Home Ministry panel, as the complainant is Home Ministry itself on the case and the former Home Minister is the main culprit in the destruction of documents.

Terming this as a serious conflict of interest issue, Swamy said that after Delhi Police registration of FIR, Chidambaram cannot hold the Chairmanship of the Home Ministry panel. As a custom, leaders from Opposition parties are nominated for the Chairmanship of Home Ministry panel and some other panels such as the Public Accounts Committee (PAC).

“I write this letter to draw your attention to the fact that the Ministry of Home Affairs acting as a Complainant has filed a Criminal Complaint with the Delhi Police regarding the fraud, forgery and or disappearance of papers concerning the encounter death in the Ishrat Jehan incident. For the purpose of investigation of this cognizable offence, persons who managed the key positions in the Ministry of Home Affairs during UPA 2009-2012 will be questioned.”

“P Chidambaram was the Minister for Home Affairs during this period and he has recently been appointed with your approval and on nomination as the Chairman of the Standing Committee for the Ministry of Home Affairs. Hence a serious issue of conflict of interest arises in this matter and the proper ethical step would be to ask Chidambaram to step down from the Chairmanship of the said Standing Committee till further notice depending on how the investigation/ charge sheet proceeds and who will be found it for inclusion in the charge sheet,” said Swamy in the letters to Lok Sabha Speaker and Rajya Sabha Chairman, citing concerned provisions.

  1. Why should there be a debate whether to remove or not. It should be obvious. He should be removed having been chargedsheeted. Why is it not happening?

  2. Now that Charge sheets have been filed against Chidambaram, his continuance in the STANDING COMMITTEE – in whatever capacity – is totally untenable. He should be removed from those positions.

  3. I am amazed how BJP & the parliamentary process can still appoint the Dhoti Clad minister to head the Committees ?? Is BJP sleeping or sleeping with the Dhoti clad minister ??

    • Even having power Modiji and his government appear clueless and powerless to handle such scenarios… Or.. is it some tacit understanding?? Lutyens circle.?!

  4. It is quite evident and clear conflict of interest. Why should VP hold this . ” Crook Chidu” has to be shown the door.

  5. Yes. This is the right thing to do. Of course it doesn’t need my endorsement :-). Let this happen immediately. I hope BJP Govt will take the steps immediately.
