Tamil Nadu govt makes U-turn on Pattina Pravesam ban
After stiff opposition from various Hindu groups and ‘mutts’, the Tamil Nadu government has revoked the ban on ‘Pattina Pravesam‘ of the Dharmapuram Adheenam, or the practice of carrying the seer in a palanquin by his disciples, to be held on May 22.
The Tamil Nadu government faced a massive outrage after which, on Sunday it revoked the ban on centuries-old ‘Pattina Pravesam’, a Hindu ritual during which disciples carry the seer of Shaivite monastic institution – Dharmapuram Adheenam – on their shoulders in a palanquin.
The Dharmapuram Adheenam is one of Tamil Nadu’s historically important Shaivite religious institutions.
Myladuthurai RDO, L Balaji, citing human rights violations in carrying the pontiff of the mutt on a palanquin, banned the practice leading to a major outcry from across the state and outside.
Seers of various mutts across Tamil Nadu including the Dharmapuram Adheenam had held a meeting with Chief Minister M K Stalin at the Secretariat on Saturday night and asked him to revoke the ban on ‘Pattina Pravesam.
BJP Tamil Nadu Vice President Narayanan Thirupathy said that the government revoked the ban after strong opposition. Targeting Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin, he said his government is an anti-Hindu government. “It is regularly attacking the Hindu rituals, cultures, and traditions. After strong opposition, the government has revoked the ban on ‘Pattina Pravesam’ of the Dharumapuram Adheenam,” he said.
The Dharmapuram Adheenam had taken a position that the disciples were not engaged in any human rights violation, saying that the disciples carry the seer on their own and after the necessary penance.
BJP State President K Annamalai has said that he would personally be part of the team to carry the seer in the palanquin if the Tamil Nadu government goes ahead with the ban.
In a fresh order on May 8, Sunday, Mayiladuthurai’s Revenue Divisional Officer has now officially revoked the ban on Dharmapuram Adheenam Seer’s Pattina Pravesam ritual.
