There must be a way to end the farmers protests

While the new farm laws have been accepted by most states, why is Punjab unhappy?

The Government must use the opportunity given by SC while fixing the troublemakers

Even after the Supreme Court’s attempt to patch up, farmers protests are continuing by creating chaos along Delhi borders for the past 60 days. With many anti-India forces like Sikhs For Justice and the Ultra-Left elements penetrating the stir, the shyness on part of the Government to take stern action is now making the situation worse. In a strange turn of events, a set of farmers sabotaged the Covid vaccination program at a place in Haryana, which is nothing but heinous. The lack of sternness from the Government to deal with such anti-social elements which have penetrated into farmers’ protest, will lead to a deterioration of law and order.

SC rebuffs Delhi Police

The latest was on Monday (January 18), when Supreme Court admonished Delhi Police for seeking permission to ban the tractor rally in Delhi on January 26, Republic Day. Why did Delhi Police under the powerful Union Home Minister Amit Shah seek permission from the Court to ban a tractor rally? Why can’t the Police take a stand? The Supreme Court has rightly reminded the Delhi Police about its powers and responsibilities by admonishing them for seeking orders from Court. This incident exposes the lack of taking decisions by the Government.

The farm laws are for the good of the farmer but as always there is a communication gap and this needs to be bridged right away.

A repeat of Shaheen Bagh?

What played out for more than 100 days in the Shaheen Bagh protests in Delhi which ultimately ended in 52 deaths in Delhi riots and thousands injured and a huge loss to properties, might happen again. When you analyse things without passion, the fault lies with the Government for allowing such protests for days. The laws in Delhi are clear; protests only at designated areas and for a set of hours in the day. The BJP leadership thought they can get Hindu vote consolidation vote in Delhi Assembly elections by the pro-Muslim organization’s Shaheen Bagh protest by blocking the crucial National Highway. But when the results came, BJP bit the dust with just eight seats in the 70-member Assembly in February 2020. Remember the same BJP won all the seven seats of Delhi eight months ago in the Lok Sabha elections of May 2019. A wily Kejriwal had subsidized free water and electricity for the electorate only to raise the prices after the elections.

Talks and more talks

Coming back to the farmers’ protests, Agriculture Minister Narendra Tomar and Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal are now entering into the tenth round of talks with farmers’ unions without a sign of positivity. The Supreme Court in an unprecedented way opened a route to arrive at a peaceful solution by staying the implementation of the controversial three farm laws, expressing displeasure at the way it was brought in by the Government and got it passed in Parliament.

Instead of abusing the farmers and floating canards by low lives and anonymous trolls in social media, it is time for the Government and ruling party BJP to make real efforts to patch up and not make the situation worse. Farmer Unions must withdraw protests and not allow their followers to sit in hard cold winter. The farm laws are for the good of the farmer but as always there is a communication gap and this needs to be bridged right away.

  1. “BJP bit the dust with just eight seats in the 70-member Assembly in February 2020. Remember the same BJP won all the seven seats of Delhi eight months ago in the Lok Sabha elections.”— This conclusion is incorrect: Delhi’s majority’s last couple of elections’ pattern has been that it votes the BJP (~ Modi) to rule the Center, and the AAP (~ Kejriwal) to rule the State. The minorities always vote stubbornly the AAP (~ non-BJP). Modi is overdoing Nehru’s and Vajpayee’s antics & tactics in order to woo them, only in vain and to the majority’s disdain.

  2. very surprising to read such a post from Sree Iyer! and u call people who do not agree with so called farmers protest as trolls? When the Govt said, they can discuss clause by clause of the legislation and the “union” can explain where and what is their “fear”, the so called farmers do not want to discuss. Their only slogan as appears from Media is “repeal” of the legislation ! In other words, a section of people from one area can hold the nation to ransom?
And, re Delhi police asking SCI permission, in a way good that they did and made SCI say it is Delhi police which needs to take a decision. normally, SCI is just waiting for any one to go with a PIL or writ and then give a stay with some belittling comment on Police or Govt.

Time courts to remember that govt is working for people as much as courts. Unless there are glaring or intentional deviations causing harm to public, courts must comment in a meaningful manner without using too much negativity in comments

  3. Modi needs to take rest & allow Yogi to take over.

With Yogi at top, these raskals – YY & PB would have met the same fate as Azam Khan & Munawar Faruqui

The COOL GANGSTER Azam Khan is today cooling his heels in Jail along with Family.

Munawar is wetting his pants on being summoned by UP Police.

Take Yogendra Yadav & Prashant Bhushan in custody & show them police treatment.

This orchestrated protest will automatically fizzle out.

  4. 40 thousand Dalals (calling themselves Farmers) can CAN COCK A SNOOK at 40 cr genuine Farmers

This can happen only in India – under the spineless Modi-Shah Regime. Manmohan was far better

  5. The article on one hand calls for withdrawal of the so-called farmers protest, and on the other for the goi to “ patch up “. Seems like the author is more unsure than the govt which indeed is taking a stand, albeit not categorically.
