No one can suppress the truth and it will come out sooner or later. The latest example is that of former Union Minister and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) Member of Parliament (MP) T R Baalu’s letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for reviving the controversial Setu Samduram Project to break Rama Setu. This letter exposes the role of the first National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee in demolishing Rama Setu. DMK was a partner in the Vajpayee Government and the files show that as Minister of State (MoS) for Shipping Arun Jaitley was the first person to sign on the DMK’s most wanted project. As MoS Shipping, he even rejected the earlier objections of the Environment Ministry in breaking Rama Setu, the long sand and rock stretch linking India and Sri Lanka.

Baalu was personally a big loser when the Supreme Court stopped the Setu Samudram project on the petition filed by the then Janata Party leader Subramanian Swamy in 2008. Baalu is actively involved in shipping and dredging business. Baalu’s anger is seen in his July 10th three-page letter to Modi. He even claims China can be countered by reviving the Setu Samudram project and reminds Modi that this project was very dear to Vajpayee. In his entire letter, Baalu’s hate for the Hindu religion can be seen on many occasions. In his entire letter, Baalu insists on calling Rama Setu as “Adams Bridge” and blames Swamy for collapsing the project by misleading the Court by misusing religion. The full, obsequious letter of Baalu is published below this article. In the end the uncouth DMK leader gives a class to Modi on Hinduism and takes out of context  Sri Ramakrishna’s definition of atheism too.

Subramanian Swamy was brought into this case at the fag end by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Chief KS Sudarshan and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) chief Ashok Singhal in 2006.

The interesting aspect to this story is that no one from the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) has responded to Baalu’s letter though BJP changed its stand on Rama Setu on 2006 when the UPA Government went ahead with breaking Rama Setu, where billions of Hindus believe is built by Lord Hanuman’s army for Lord Ram to enter Sri Lanka. Because of the unholy role of Vajpayee in breaking Rama Setu, BJP still prefers to keep a criminal silence on the matter.

“You are well aware that this Project was dear to many Political giants and great sons of this country like Anna, Kamaraj, Kalaignar, and Atalji. In fact, because of the long-cherished mutual affection and esteem between Atalji and Kalaignar, and also the great regard that Anna and Atalji had for each other as colleagues in Rajya Sabha in the early 1960s, the Setu Samudram project got life with approval of feasibility study by NDA Government headed by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayeeji. I must share with you here my personal knowledge that Atalji expressed his immense happiness and blessing when I invited him to the project inaugural function in 2005 at Madurai. Let me quote his words, “This my project. I am so happy” and I was also happy to accept his wishes, said Baalu to Modi in his letter, urging a revival of the controversial project. It is a known fact that Baalu was dreaming a lot on this project and the letter shows that still he is not yet recovered from the shock after the apex court canceled the project.

Baalu’s anger at Subramanian Swamy for stopping the project is evident from this letter. Though he had no courage to name him, Baalu said: “When the works were progressing smoothly, certain elements inimical to the national security and economic prosperity of India, schemed and misled the judiciary by invoking irrelevant and religious beliefs and succeeded in their designs to stall the prestigious ship channel project activities. It is now over 12 long years since the project works have come to a standstill.”

Subramanian Swamy was brought into this case at the fag end by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Chief KS Sudarshan and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) chief Ashok Singhal in 2006. That time Swamy told the leaders that Arun Jaitley can’t be involved in this case as he as the first Shipping Minister had approved this project during the Vajpayee regime. After the Supreme Court verdict in 2008, Baalu made a speech in Parliament asking BJP leaders why they did U-turn in the Setu Samudram project. He said all Shipping Ministers in Vajpayee Government – Arun Jaitley, Ved Prakash Goel, Shatrughan Sinha, and Tirunavakkarasu – passed this project. No BJP leader stood up and answered Baalu’s question.

Reacting to Baalu’s letter Swamy Tweeted:  “T.R. Baalu letter to PM says: “certain elements misled the judiciary by invoking irrelevant religious beliefs…”. This is contempt towards Hinduism and Lord Ram. Further, it was MMS who told SC that Govt will appoint the Pachauri Committee which was found SSCP a disaster. So I won the case.DMK take a walk!”.

The government of India has declared that there is no breaking of Rama Setu and Baalu’s dream project has collapsed which was jointly inaugurated by Manmohan Singh and Sonia Gandhi in 2006. But still, Prime Minister Modi has not declared Rama Setu as a National monument and the file is pending on his table for the past two years. Why is Modi not declaring Rama Setu as National Monument? Only he can answer this question.

  1. Vajpayee was a windbag and a nehruvian in the garb of a Hindu. He even went to the extent of requesting the then US president to let off Rahul Gandhi in a drug smuggling case in the US.

  2. When you had enemies within, your hands are tied. BJP is doing a tight rope walking with old elements of Congress inside BJP and compulsion coalition (once Manmohan Singh used to support his view of why he is silent) of the BJP-DMK alliance in 1999-2004 Vajpayee govt, which allowed DMK guys to loot. DMK had a free run for 15 long years from 1999 to 2014 in the govt at the center and now they are finding themselves fish out of the water, being out of power, both central and state for almost 6 years. Modi should declare this as heritage and national monument and close the case. TR Balu should be tried for contempt of court for giving a misleading picture in his letter to Modi.

  3. There was and is, a still prevalent view amongst North Indians (gradually being retrenched) that anything south of the Godavari is not worthy of consideration… Not surprised that Vajpayee,Jaitely and a whole host of Northern Indian politicians starting from Nehru were happy in their ignorance, arrogance and contempt for the the Southern peoples of the Indian subcontinent! To them the Rama Setu means nothing other a means to enrich themselves. Greedy only for power & wealth. To them the pinnacle ofIndian culture is display snake charmers & indian rope trick ‘professionals’ to foreign dignitaries.

  4. Two points:
    1. Baalu says that “the Channel route pose[s] zero disturbance to the so called Ramar Palam, i.e. Adam’s Bridge.” If there is really zero disturbance to the Ram Setu, what is our problem in letting it happen (presuming the Channel route truly has some national security value)?
    2. In his letter it seems Baalu has suppressed R.K. Pachauri’s rejection of the project (on environmental grounds). This amounts to material suppression of facts. A notice should be sent to him by the Petitioners in the case before SC.

  5. TR Baalu should know that past is past
Former PM and MOS Shipping who signed on the document for whatever coalition govt compulsions they had are no more in Govt
This is a new dispensation which is governed and cats as per the will of the people — which is true democracy
So he can write letters, go on hunger strike or fast onto death but this project is a NO GO as people revere Ram Sethu
    Bye bye Baalu

  6. We need to respond to others name calling. If the English wants to use their own name as Adams Bride, we should start calling the Thames River: Lake Sewer, given its history.

  7. Vajpayee and Jaitley are crooks. They have no Hindutwa ideology though they enjoyed power by the hard work of RSS and BJP cadre.

  8. We understand the DMK being anti Hindu but Vajpayee going along with them is disgusting. The problem with People like Vajpayee is that they want to project themselves as moderate & liberal & in the process they backstab their own community.
