Centre treating Udaipur killing as ‘terror attack’ incident

Amid the gruesome Udaipur Islamist killing of the Hindu tailor Kanhaiya Lal that has shocked the nation, Union Home Ministry has directed the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to take over the probe in the matter.

Kanhaiya Lal — a tailor was beheaded by two Muslim men identified as Gaus Mohammad and Mohd Riyaz Ansari for allegedly supporting BJP’s suspended spokesperson Nupur Sharma on social media. The duo was arrested within hours of the murder by the state police.

Many sources are pointing to the “ISIS links” of one of the accused, who identifies himself as Riaz Ansari in the video. As per sources Ansari was in contact on three occasions in 2021, with one Mujeeb Abbasi, who was picked up in connection with a recently busted ISIS case.

According to officials, the Centre is treating the killing as a “terror attack“. The incident triggered communal tension even as police clamped prohibitory orders in the city for the entire month and suspended internet services in Rajasthan.

HMO tweeted, “MHA has directed the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to take over the investigation of the brutal murder of Shri Kanhaiya Lal Teli committed at Udaipur, Rajasthan yesterday. The involvement of any organisation and international links will be thoroughly investigated.”

The NIA sleuths are already up for Udaipur, officials said. The Rajasthan Police also announced a Special Investigation Team (SIT) soon after the arrest of the two men.

Tension prevailed in Rajasthan’s Udaipur a day after the incident. Prohibitory orders banning people from assembling are in place with mobile internet services remaining suspended.

Around 2:30 pm two Muslim youth arrived at the shop on a bike. One of them held a phone to make a video and the other one pretended to give his measurements to the tailor. While the victim proceeded to take measurements of one of the men, he was ambushed and brutally hit on his head and neck with swords. The whole act was deliberately caught on camera. The killers, Mohammed Riyaz Akhtar and Gaus Mohammed later confessed to the killing in a video with no remorse while brandishing the murder weapon.

  1. Total intelligence failure. Govt has no info on the street or community or locality situation or its people & their ways….. sleeping society will always invite such barbaric actions. Judiciary will briefly wake up & then go to deep slumber for next 200 years. Mera Bharat Mahan
