Congress sycophants have been breathlessly praising Rahul Gandhi’s ‘inspiring’ speech at the party’s plenary session on Sunday.
The Congress is on a high for the most bizarre reasons. Its candidates lost their deposits in the two by-elections held in Uttar Pradesh recently, but the party is celebrating. Months ago, it had failed to dislodge the BJP from Gujarat when everything was supposedly working in its favour, but it hailed the loss as a moral victory. The Congress is jumping with glee over its wins in a fistful of seats in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan by-elections and believes it to be equivalent to having already wrested the two States.
This is not all. When Telugu Desam Party chief Chandrababu Naidu walked out of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance, he got in touch with regional leaders such as Mamata Banerjee, ignoring the Congress which was salivating at the NDA’s loss of a partner. When Sonia Gandhi organised a dinner meeting of non-NDA parties, powerful regional satraps such as Akhilesh Yadav, Mayawati and Mamata Banerjee failed to turn up. Incidentally, they all have shown great enthusiasm at the prospect of a non-Congress led front to take on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP. Yet the Congress calls the meeting a grand success. The situation is so glum that one of its alliance partners, Nationalist Congress Party supreme Shard Pawar, has had to touch base with Raj Thackeray to lure him into a Congress-helmed front.
Saying that people accused of heinous crimes are holding high office, while he is out on bail in a case of criminality.
In the Uttar Pradesh by-polls, the Samajwadi Party had put up candidates against the Congress nominees. This, despite the fact that only a year ago the SP and the Congress had contested the State Assembly election in an alliance. By going it alone, the SP demonstrated its low esteem for the Congress. To rub it into the grand old party, Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party extended support to the SP and not to the Congress candidates, and ensured the SP’s victory. What more humiliation could there have been for Rahul Gandhi that the BSP should have chosen its bitter rival in the State over his candidates?
The Congress could not retain Meghalaya and it was wiped out in Tripura and Nagaland. It is facing extinction in the entire North-East, having earlier lost Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur. In Odisha, it has virtually ceded the opposition space to the BJP. The BJP threat is looming over the Congress in Kerala too, where the latter is the main opposition party. In West Bengal, the buzz is around the BJP and not the discredited Congress or the defeated Left Front. And yet, the Congress is upbeat.

Ridiculing the Goods and Services Tax, whose rates are fixed by the GST Council which also comprises Congress Finance Ministers, is inspiring. Insulting a nationalist, VD “Veer’ Savarkar, and by extension, the Hindu community is inspiring. Casting aspersions by way of personal slights, on the country’s Prime Minister is inspiring. Saying that people accused of heinous crimes are holding high office in the BJP, while forgetting that he is an accused and out on bail in a case of criminality, is inspiring.
Sonia Gandhi is pleased, and so the rest have to be, too.
But who is to tell emperor Rahul Gandhi that he has no clothes, that he has successfully led his party to defeat after electoral defeat? A Navjot Singh Siddhu claims that Rahul Gandhi will unfurl the National flag on Independence Day in 2019 from the ramparts of the Red Fort, and there is jubilation over a bridge not yet arrived at, let alone crossed. Sonia Gandhi is pleased, and so the rest have to be, too.
In his plenary address, Rahul Gandhi discovered the epic, Mahabharata. He positioned the Congress as the Pandavas and the BJP as the Kauravas. When his party’s Government was in power, it had told the court that it did not believe in the existence of Ram. So, Krishna is for real and Ram is fictional! Now, this is inspiring.
Congress apologists are going gaga over Rahul Gandhi’s admission of problems that plague the party. Let’s recollect that Rajiv Gandhi, then newly minted as Prime Minister, had lashed out at power-brokers within the Congress and vowed to set right the malaise. Nothing happened; instead, he himself lost credibility and led his party to defeat in the wake of various defence scams.
The big mistake that Rahul Gandhi is making is this: He is interpreting whatever public discontent there may be for whatever reasons against the Modi Government, as a public endorsement of the Congress. He may not have to wait long to be disabused of this notion.
