India went through de-industrialization during the British Era, which saw a remarkable change in the economy. We lost our traditional economy which was a blend of Agriculture and handicrafts owing to which the unemployed artisan, skilled labourer recoursed to agriculture for their living [1].
Post-independence, India went through various phases of Industrialization, the 1950s – 1960s saw the manufacturing industry grappling for building the industrial foundation, 1965 -1980s saw the licensing and permit Raj, after which, in 1990s came liberalization period and currently, we are in the global competitive phase.
The manufacturing sector in India currently contributes 16-17% to GDP which is less compared to other countries such as, Korea and China, which contributes 29% of GDP.
India exported copper cathodes – obtained after the copper ore is a smelter and refined. As per the 2017-2018 figures, we exported 378 Kilotonnes whereas in 2018-19 exports dipped to mere 48 Kilotonnes
As per 2014 data, the manufacturing sector provides employment to 12% of the country’s workforce and has the capacity to generate more employment. Every job created in the manufacturing industry has a multiplier effect of creating 2-3 jobs in the service sector. With 65% of the working population below 35 Years, India even has a demographic advantage, owing to which the cost of manpower is low compared to other countries.
Thus, manufacturing is rightfully the focus of our Hon’ble Prime Minister’s Vision for Make In India (MII) which was launched on September 25, 2014. The idea of MII is to increase the manufacturing sector’s contribution to GDP to 25% [2].
We drive out POSCO and then export iron ore; we shut down Vedanta and then export Aluminium ore. We shut down the textile industry and then export cotton. We used to blame the Brits that they take raw material from India and sell finished goods here. Who is running our country now?

There are two widely outraged cases one is in Tamil Nadu and another one in Mumbai. In both cases, the losses are huge, protests are enormous, fetching no results at all.
The first case is about a manufacturing company – Vedanta Resource Ltd, Sterlite Copper which is closed for two years now, the factory closed in March 2018 for annual maintenance first, and later due to protests, when the govt issued an order to close the facility. The company suffered losses of around $600 million.
The plant was closed due to the protest by the local residences where they alleged that the plant is harming the environment and their health in Thoothukudi.
India’s 38% of the copper needs were produced by Sterlite Copper nearly 4 lakh tonnes every year. But, with Tamil Nadu Government’s order to shut down the plant, the copper production reduced, not only resulting in a decrease in exports but we have started importing copper from other countries.
India exported copper cathodes – obtained after the copper ore is a smelter and refined. As per the 2017-2018 figures, we exported 378 Kilotonnes whereas in 2018-19 exports dipped to mere 48 Kilotonnes. Indian exports saw a steep fall of around 87%. Obviously benefitting the other countries [3].
The case is still going on and the plant is shut invariably. with all the protests and court cases going on, not only, the company has suffered enormous losses, so many employees lost their jobs. Decreased exports and increased imports of copper.
Here’s the eye-opener, in the last 5 years, the government has planted 33 crore trees. Why would they be so hell-bent on “destroying” a forest?
Mumbai metro – Aarey is yet another saga, where the protests have halted the project, which has already caused huge losses to the govt and delayed the project by a minimum of 2-3 years.

The agitation is led by Bollywood actors, activists, NGO’s and few citizens. A lot of protesters are not aware of the actual facts. Clearly, they are being misled by half-truths or complete lies by the NGOs. Most of the people are “opposed” to the construction of the metro shed 3 at the “Aarey Forest” which are the “lungs” of Mumbai and not to the idea of Mumbai metro [4].
It is argued that the govt’s move is anti-environment, it is destroying forests, killing the lungs of the city. So, here’s the eye-opener, in the last 5 years, the government has planted 33 crore trees. Why would they be so hell-bent on “destroying” a forest?
Firstly, “Aarey” is not even a forest, it is grazing land. The notification with regards to reservation of the car shed area in Aarey Milk Colony is also legally tenable and well settled at the Bombay High Court. Protesters first need to refer to the judgment passed by the Hon’ble HC in a petition filed by Amrita Bhattacharjee & others in Writ Petition no. 2766 of 2017.
Trapping the Right at every opportunity, by all wrongful means appears to be the right thing to do for the “Liberals“. A systematic attack is set in motion to generate a hateful atmosphere at every fair achievement by the Right. To them, their rules are above the Constitution. Wonder, who is ruling the country?
PM Modi is striving hard to make India Atmanirbhar (Self-sufficient), but we are making his efforts even more strenuous by protesting to shut down the projects instead of finding a solution thereby incurring huge loses and hampering the economy. Modi needs to claw it back one inch a time.
