Why is Kashmir interloper Yechury not working to end the political killings in Kerala?

[dropcap color=”#008040″ boxed=”yes” boxed_radius=”8px” class=”” id=””]N[/dropcap]owadays Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury is overeager to bring peace in Kashmir, where he is out of his depth. He is busy explaining to Lutyens’ media the need for bringing peace to the troubled Valley and mooting talks with separatists, even after they shut the doors on him.

Instead of interloping in Kashmir, as CPI(M) General Secretary, Yechury should work overtime to bring an end to the political killings in Kerala, where his colleague Pinarayi Vijayan is ruling. In just a 100 days, after Vijayan became Kerala Chief Minister, as many as four persons were killed in political clashes. Two were from the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), one each from the Muslim League and CPI(M). Interestingly in Kerala’s political killings, the  CPI(M) will be always in one side – mostly as accused and rarely as victim.

Among the total four persons killed, three are from Kannur district, the native area of Chief Minister. More than 50 persons were injured in several attacks between the CPI(M) and the RSS. Several offices of both parties were ransacked in the first 100 days of Stalinist- line Communist Vijayan rule.

[dropcap color=”#008040″ boxed=”yes” boxed_radius=”8px” class=”” id=””]T[/dropcap]wo days ago, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) headquarters in Kerala was also under attack from allegedly the CPI(M) mafia. Political killings in Kerala started in the mid-70s and as many as 200 people have lost their lives and it usually happens when CPI(M) comes to power. Even some of their coalition partner CPI workers were also hacked by CPI(M) goons in Kerala.

Apart from killing the political opponents, CPI(M) side allegedly sabotages prosecution by threatening or even killing crucial witnesses. Yechury is well aware of the activities of his comrades in Kerala. Till 2009, his West Bengal colleagues were also doing the same with the political opponents till Mamta Banerjee emerged and now the CPI(M) cadre is facing the music from the ruling TMC cadres.

CPIM) has a respectable leader from Kashmir – their Central Committee Member Mohammed Yousuf Tarigami. He is an elected MLA and has been winning elections for a long time. The limelight lover Yechury should leave the Kashmir related issues to the suave Tarigami, who is a son of the soil and knows the intricacies of the troubled Valley. Yechury made a poor political move, going to the anti-national separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani’s home with Communist Party of India (CPI)’s D Raja and Janata Dal United(JD(U))’s Sharad Yadav. They should have taken Tarigami with them, who would perhaps have given wise counsel but their move has blown up on their faces. That this was an optics exercise was clear from the get go. Rule 101 of Politics – When you go for Optics, ensure that the outcome is guaranteed!

After the electoral washout in West Bengal, it is a known fact that the Kerala Unit of CPIM) is financing the CPI(M) Headquarters affairs. Vijayan is the uncrowned king of the party in Kerala and Yechury is well aware that he can’t tackle the powerful Kerala comrade, who holds the party purse strings. So Yechury might have thought of gazing at Kashmir valley where there are no internal challenges.

  • Yechury just like his predecessor Prakash Karat, has no grip on the Kerala unit. And he merely has to agree to whatever Vijayan demands, because his party now has presence only in two states. Vijayan is currently in his honeymoon period, with no opposition from his party units. He has also sidelined VS, and now is taking the decisions unilaterally. One thing is for sure, that this is going to be the last big-term for CPM in kerala. With all his party's acts being performed in Kerala, the support for BJP/RSS will only increase immensely. Since CPM could not stop RSS 15 years back, there is now zero possibility to do that now.

  • Comrade Yech toes the party line. Cannot hold him solely responsible. Must hold his party responsible in my opinion. Yech by himself is a total failure in my opinion anyway.
