Why were Government lawyers absent in SC when Vijay Mallya’s case was called?

Inept or forgot? Govt. counsel fails to appear in Mallya case
Govt. counsel fails to appear in Mallya case

On July 10, in the Supreme Court, Government’s law officers committed a faux pas in the Supreme Court. In the fugitive liquor baron Vijay Mallya’s case filed by Banks for dues, money laundering and related contempt case, the government advocates were not present in the Court. Solicitor General Ranjit Kumar who is responsible for the day-to-day activities in the court affairs has committed a serious breach of duty.

As far as Solicitor General Ranjit Kumar is concerned, his not so above-the-board relations with Vijay Mallya is well known. In June 2016, he was caught meeting Vijay Mallya in London. PGurus have reported this in July 2016.

Meanwhile, on the same evening, Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi led a team to London to discuss with his counterparts in the United Kingdom to exchange a list of wanted persons and crime related issues. Clearly, exchange of fugitives like Vijay Mallya and Lalit Modi are high on the agenda of this meeting. In the Supreme Court’s case, Home Ministry is also a party as the Judges have asked the Home Ministry to produce Mallya on June 10. So the Home Ministry also has a responsibility about the representation of the case through a legal officer to appraise the Apex Court. Look at the irony – without conducting the cases against Mallya in India, these top officials are rushing to London. A trip to London is always an exciting affair for Government officials.

As far as Solicitor General Ranjit Kumar is concerned, his not so above-the-board relations with Vijay Mallya is well known. In June 2016, he was caught meeting Vijay Mallya in London. PGurus have reported this in July 2016. Ranjit Kumar was caught with fugitive Vijay Mallya at a party hosted by a controversial rice exporting firm Amira Nature Foods head Karan Chanana at his mansion in Wilson Crescent. The party was hosted to felicitate lobbyist Suhel Seth. This hobnobbing of Solicitor General and the fugitive happened when CBI and ED were struggling for actions on their Letter Rogatory (LR) with UK authorities to catch Mallya.

In these circumstances, the absence of Government of lawyers from the Supreme Court on June 10 is inexcusable. It is high time that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Law Minister Ravi Shanker Prasad weed out these incompetent venal officers. They are fast becoming an embarrassment to the government and the country.

  1. None knows why SG appointment is done by defacto PM Arun Jaitely. He is appointed to save all friends of defacto PM.When SG Ranjit Kumar didn’t appeared in court on fixed date it proved his collusion. But Law minister is under domain of Arun Jaitely

  2. I would suppose, suggest and even support any working model, in order to observe, interpret, explain and predict ALL social, political, legal and financial events CURRENTLY occurring in India, to be named EVENT-FIXING and, to start with, developed on the basis of our PUBLIC awareness of what is known as MATCH-FIXING.
I would also imagine this model to involve and integrate ALL concerned individuals cutting across ALL– age, gender, education, qualification, profession, knowledge, skill, class, level and what-else-not– categories of our populace, everybody forming a highly sensitive, cogent, synergistic, symbiotic, dynamic, healthy, hearty, efficient, effective and stratified-cum-networked matrix, somewhat like, say the Wikipedia &/or the linux communities…
And this would be only a beginning!
