Police probe ongoing; truck driver detained for questioning

In a devastating road accident on Monday afternoon, 13 people were killed and over 10 others injured when a speeding dumper truck ploughed into 17 vehicles near Loha Mandi in Jaipur’s Harmada area, police said.

According to officials, the dumper — which was empty — was moving from Loha Mandi Petrol Pump toward Road No. 14 when the driver lost control and rammed into several vehicles and pedestrians over a stretch of nearly 300 meters. The truck crushed multiple cars and two-wheelers before coming to a halt. However, eyewitnesses suggest that the driver was drunk as well.

Emergency teams rushed to the scene, and the injured were immediately taken to Kanwatia Hospital and SMS Hospital. Traffic on the route was diverted to clear the way for ambulances and rescue operations.

Police confirmed that three of the injured are in critical condition and are receiving treatment at the SMS Hospital Trauma Centre.

Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and instructed officials to provide the best possible treatment to those injured.

He dispatched ministers Jhavar Singh Kharra and KK Bishnoi to Kanwatia Hospital, and Suresh Rawat and Sumit Godara to SMS Hospital, to oversee the relief and medical arrangements.

“The loss of lives in the road accident at Loha Mandi in Harmada, Jaipur, is extremely tragic and painful. Instructions have been given to ensure proper treatment for the injured. May God grant peace to the departed souls and strength to the bereaved families to bear this loss,” Sharma wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed grief over the incident and said he is praying for those who were injured in the incident. “Pained by the loss of lives due to a mishap in Jaipur, Rajasthan. My thoughts are with those who have lost their near and dear ones,” the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) quoted PM Modi as saying.

He also announced that an ex gratia of Rs.2 lakh would be given to the next of kin of each deceased. Besides, the injured would be given Rs.50,000.

The Chief Minister said he is personally monitoring the situation and directed the district collector and hospital authorities to ensure there is no lapse in medical care or relief support.

Former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot also condoled the loss of lives in the tragic accident.

Police have detained the truck driver, and a case has been registered. The authorities are investigating whether mechanical failure or overspeeding led to the accident.

This is the second major road accident in Rajasthan in as many days. At least 15 people, including 10 women and four children, died, and two others were injured when a tempo traveller rammed into a stationary trailer truck in the Phalodi area on Sunday evening.
