Nowgam police station destroyed in late-night blast; terror angle not ruled out

Less than 24 hours after the home belonging to Dr. Umar Un Nabi was demolished using explosives in his native village of Pulwama, a mysterious, powerful blast ripped through the Nowgam police station late Friday night, in which at least 9 people were killed and 30 others received grievous injuries. The blast was reported around 11:20 p.m.

Most of the deceased included policemen and government officials present inside the police station to extract samples of explosives shifted from Faridabad.

While some of the explosives recovered have been kept at the Forensic Lab of the police, the major part of the 360 kg of explosives (Ammonium Nitrate) was stored at the police station, where the primary case for the terror module was registered.

The explosives recovered from the rented residence of the arrested doctor, Muzammil Ganaie, were being sampled as part of the ongoing investigation.

Small successive explosions prevented immediate rescue operations by the bomb disposal squad. The police authorities are still investigating the nature of the blast and have not ruled out the possibility of any sabotage.

The Nowgam police station, located in a densely populated area, was completely damaged in the blast. Several vehicles parked in the area and houses in the neighbourhood were affected due to the intensity of the blast.

The road leading to the Nowgam police station was sealed to allow the policemen to complete the rescue operations and lift forensic samples.

The police officials posted at the Nowgam police station launched initial investigations, which led them to bust the sinister plot behind carrying out serial blasts across different locations in the National Capital.

DGP Jammu and Kashmir Police Nalin Prabhat, along with senior officers, rushed to the blast site and supervised the rescue operations. The death toll is likely to increase as several policemen received critical injuries and were undergoing treatment at the Army hospital in Srinagar.
