Damage on Kokrajhar track triggers probe; officials suspect sabotage behind late-night explosion

A suspected explosion damaged a section of railway track between Salakati and Kokrajhar stations in Assam’s Alipurduar Division early Thursday morning, disrupting train movement for several hours, officials said.

The incident occurred around 1:00 am, when a goods train, UP AZARA Sugar, reported a heavy jerk while passing through the section. The train manager immediately halted the train, and upon inspection, damage to the track and sleepers was discovered — suspected to be the result of a blast.

The Superintendent of Railway Police, Pranjit Borah, said that an investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the explosion. “It could be a suspected blast. The investigation is in its preliminary stage. If it turns out to be sabotage, we will identify those involved,” Borah stated.

The Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) confirmed the sequence of events, noting that the track was fully restored by 5:25 am, with normal services resuming at 5:30 am.

State Police, RPF, and intelligence agencies are investigating the matter. Around 8–10 trains were detained due to the incident. Patrolling has been intensified in the section,” the CPRO said in a statement.

While authorities are yet to confirm the cause, early indications point to a possible act of sabotage. Security forces have stepped up vigilance and track monitoring in the affected area to prevent further disruptions.
