Raj Thackeray says BMC election vital for Marathi-speaking citizens

Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray has urged party workers and citizens to exercise heightened vigilance ahead of the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, describing the poll as a “crucial” moment for the Marathi-speaking population of Mumbai.

Speaking at the inauguration of the MNS’ Konkan Mahotsav on Sunday, Thackeray said the political environment around the civic election was becoming increasingly sensitive and called for careful participation from voters.

“For the Marathi people, this BMC election will be the last crucial election,” he said, stressing the need for voters to remain attentive. “If we remain careless, consider it gone from our hands.”

Thackeray also expressed concerns regarding possible discrepancies in voter lists, urging supporters to scrutinise whether names on electoral rolls were authentic. “It is important to pay attention to whether the voters are genuine or bogus,” he said while criticising the management of voter records.

The MNS leader’s renewed assertiveness follows the party’s recent setbacks in the state elections, despite extending unconditional support to the Mahayuti alliance during the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. His evolving political stance comes at a time when the relationship between Raj Thackeray and Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray has drawn public interest.

Once considered political rivals, the cousins have appeared increasingly aligned in recent months, both in public interactions and political messaging.
