Rahul Mamkootathil controversy deepens; Kerala CM accuses Congress of shielding MLA

It’s official now. Pinarayi Vijayan, the Chief Minister of Kerala, has said that Congress leader and MLA, Rahul Mamkootathil, a close associate of Rahul Gandhi, is a sexually perverted person. “The Congress leaders were aware of his weakness for fair sex, and still they chose him over others as a candidate for the Palakkad Assembly by-election. He should have been kept away from public and social life,” Vijayan said while addressing reporters at Ernakulam on Friday.

The Chief Minister was in the city to address public meetings scheduled for the day as part of the local body elections (three-tier Panchayat bodies, municipal, and corporation). He alleged that the Congress leaders were helping Rahul Mamkootathil to escape from the police net. Though the cops are in hot pursuit of Rahul, who is accused of rape, assault, and forced abortion of a pregnancy of a woman whom he had promised to marry, the predator remained elusive even on the ninth day.

The whole of Kerala is waiting with bated breath to see the aggressor in police custody. Though Vijayan was critical of Rahul Mamkootathil and a cartel of Congress leaders in the state as well as in New Delhi, he waxed eloquent on the Grand Old Party and praised it to the hilt for its great lineage and heritage. But the chief minister was highly critical of the BJP, which he alleged was a communal and fascist outfit.

More details about the escapades of Rahul Mamkootathil are coming out by the day. A Bangalore-based lady has alleged that she was kidnapped by the Congress leader, raped, and impregnated. When she refused to undergo medical termination of pregnancy, Rahul Mamkootathil threatened her with dire consequences, and this made the victim obey the orders of the MLA.

This is not the first time complaints of sexual violence have been pouring in against the Congress leader. Annie Raja, the spouse of CPI’s proprietor D Raja and next in line to be anointed as national secretary of the party in the eventuality of the death of Raja, had made a serious allegation against Mamkootathil. “While he was in New Delhi as a student, this youth used to ask for sexual favors from all the girls he came across. Many of them had approached me with complaints against him, and I had informed about the same to Congress leaders,” Annie Raja, a Catholic Christian from Kerala’s Kannur, had told reporters.[1]

Prof Konni Gopakumar, chief editor, Janabhumi, said he was shocked over the developments. “This is proof of how low a person in public life can stoop. I do not think it is possible for this person to come back to public life. The allegations are so serious, and it will be difficult for him to come out clean,” said the professor while speaking to PGurus.com.

Many political observers in the State are of the view that Shafi Parambil, MP, who was Rahul Mamkootathil’s predecessor representing Palakkad assembly constituency before getting elected to the Lok Sabha in 2024, has to be blamed for the state of affairs. “Shafi Parambil was working out a plan to place himself as the Congress’ chief ministerial candidate. He had assembled a group of young leaders around him, and Rahul Mamkootathil was one among them. Shafi, himself an Islamic fanatic, brought in Rahul from southern Kerala to Malabar as the party candidate for Palakkad by-poll, in a bid to prove his secular credentials. He was well aware of the weakness Rahul had for fair sez. Since Shafi too was known for this weakness, he thought it was a win-win situation,” said a political commentator based in Thiruvananthapuram who described Rahul Mamkootathil as a psychopath.

Shafi’s chief ministerial dreams suffered a setback, while it is almost sure that Rahul Mamkootathil’s political career is over. There is a sense of relief among the Christian faction of the Congress, which had hoped to see Mathew Kuzhalnadan and Joseph Vazhakken emerging as the leaders.

Rahul Mamkootathil’s future depends on how Rahul Gandhi and the latter’s political guru tackle the issue. Neither of them is in a position to sacrifice Mamkootathil.
