Trump-Netflix clash over Susan Rice remarks
US President Donald Trump has called on Netflix to remove former Obama administration official Susan Rice from its board of directors, warning the streaming giant to “fire her or pay the consequences.”
Trump’s comments came after Rice said Democrats would hold corporations accountable if they appeared to “take a knee” to the president. Rice made the remarks during a podcast appearance, criticising companies, news organisations and law firms that she claimed had aligned themselves with Trump’s demands for loyalty.
“They’re going to be held accountable” if Democrats return to power, Rice said. “If they think Democrats are going to play by the old rules, they’ve got another thing coming.”
Rice’s background and role at Netflix
Susan Rice served as national security adviser to former President Barack Obama and previously as US ambassador to the United Nations. She also held a senior position in the White House during former President Joe Biden’s administration.
Rice rejoined Netflix’s board in 2023 after leaving the Biden administration. Her comments have now drawn direct criticism from Trump, who did not elaborate on what “consequences” the company might face if it retains her.
Broader media tensions
Trump has previously criticised major media networks and streaming platforms over content he considers biased or unfavourable. The president has also clashed with broadcasters over regulatory issues, while Federal Communications Commission Chairman Brendan Carr has publicly raised concerns about broadcast licensing in unrelated disputes.
Netflix did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding Trump’s remarks.
Corporate landscape
The controversy unfolds as Netflix remains engaged in competitive industry negotiations, including a reported bidding battle involving Paramount Global and Warner Bros. Discovery assets through Skydance-related deal activity.
The situation underscores the increasingly blurred lines between politics, corporate governance and the media industry in an election-charged climate.
