Bengal bureaucracy reshuffled ahead of power transition
In a significant administrative move ahead of the formation of a new government, the West Bengal administration has barred retired bureaucrats appointed during the tenure of Mamata Banerjee from attending offices with immediate effect.
Officials said that retired officers who continued to serve in advisory or departmental roles have been instructed not to report to work from Tuesday onward. The directive is expected to remain in force until the new government assumes office.
Directive issued through chief secretary
According to sources, Dushyant Nariala communicated the order to all departmental secretaries, with instructions reportedly originating from Lok Bhavan. The message was conveyed verbally within departments for immediate implementation.
Resignations begin, officials vacate accommodations
Several retired officials serving as advisors across departments have already stepped down following the directive. Sources added that some have also vacated their official residences.
In a parallel move, the Chief Secretary has instructed all departments to remain on high alert and ensure the safety of important documents.
Officials have been directed to prevent files from being moved out of offices under any circumstances. Financial advisors have also been tasked with compiling detailed inventories of key documents.
BJP’s sweeping victory ends TMC rule
The administrative developments come after the Bharatiya Janata Party secured a decisive victory in the West Bengal Assembly elections, winning 207 out of 294 seats.
The Trinamool Congress, which governed the state for 15 years, was reduced to 80 seats.
In a major upset, Banerjee lost her Bhabanipur seat to Suvendu Adhikari by a margin of 15,105 votes. The constituency, long considered a TMC stronghold in south Kolkata, had turned into a high-profile contest.
BJP prepares for swearing-in ceremony
The BJP is now preparing to form its first government in the state, with the oath-taking ceremony scheduled for May 9.
