Senior Trinamool leader cites personal reasons for stepping down amid growing political turbulence within the party
The Trinamool Congress suffered another setback on Thursday after Krishna Chakraborty resigned as the Mayor of the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation, adding to the challenges facing the party in the aftermath of its electoral defeat.
A close associate of Trinamool Congress chief and former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Chakraborty submitted her resignation to the Municipal Commissioner, citing personal reasons for her decision.
Speaking to reporters after tendering her resignation, Chakraborty said the move was entirely her own decision and not driven by any political differences.
“This is entirely my personal decision. I have been in this chair for 16 years. I have no grudge against anyone. I have followed the rules to resign. I want to give some time to myself. I want to work as a councillor,” she said.
Officials of the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation confirmed that her resignation letter had been received and processed according to procedure.
According to civic officials, copies of the resignation were also sent to the State Municipal Affairs Minister and the Additional Chief Secretary of the department.
Chakraborty’s exit comes at a time when the Trinamool Congress is grappling with internal challenges and a series of political setbacks. Her resignation is likely to intensify discussions about the party’s future direction and leadership structure in the state.
The civic body is expected to initiate the process for appointing a new mayor in accordance with municipal regulations.
