Authorities step up preparedness as Nepal floods raise Gandak surge concerns
Bihar authorities have stepped up preparedness after flash floods in Nepal raised concerns over a possible sudden surge in water levels in rivers flowing into the state. The government has constituted a high-level team to continuously monitor the situation, particularly in districts along the Gandak River.
A flash flood in Nepal’s Rasuwa district on Wednesday killed at least eight people and caused widespread damage, while several people, including Indians, were reported missing. Since the Gandak originates in the Himalayan region and flows into Bihar, authorities are closely monitoring the downstream situation.

Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary said the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police were monitoring the situation and that he would hold an immediate review meeting. The state Disaster Management Department said there was a possibility of a sudden rise in the Gandak’s water flow due to the flash flood in its upper catchment area in Nepal.
Authorities have advised people living along the Gandak River and in low-lying areas to remain alert and avoid going near the river unnecessarily. Residents have also been asked not to panic, ignore rumours and follow only official instructions, particularly if water levels rise or further warnings are issued.
