PM Modi heads to Central Asia with security, connectivity and regional stability high on agenda

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said India will work with fellow members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) to advance a regional vision centred on security, connectivity and opportunity, while seeking a region free from terrorism, separatism and extremism.

Modi made the remarks ahead of his two-nation tour of Uzbekistan and the Kyrgyz Republic from August 29 to September 1. He said the visit would strengthen India’s strategic partnerships in Central Asia and deepen the country’s civilisational and people-to-people ties with the region.

Modi to attend SCO summit in Bishkek

The Prime Minister will first visit Tashkent from August 29 to 30 at the invitation of Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev. During his visit, Modi is expected to discuss ways to expand cooperation in trade and investment, digital connectivity, defence and energy, while advancing the shared visions of ‘Viksit Bharat‘ and ‘Yangi Uzbekistan‘.

From Uzbekistan, Modi will travel to Bishkek, where he will participate in the 26th SCO Summit. The summit marks 25 years of the organisation, and Modi is expected to highlight India’s priorities of security, connectivity and opportunity. He will also hold bilateral meetings with other SCO leaders on the sidelines of the summit.

The Prime Minister will additionally attend the opening ceremony of the 6th World Nomad Games and visit the Shastri Memorial and Mahatma Gandhi Centre at Tashkent State University of Oriental Studies.
