“Will Not Bow Down”: BJP Kerala Vows Statewide Protest After HQ Attack
The BJP’s Kerala state headquarters, Mararji Bhavan, came under attack late Wednesday night when unidentified persons hurled stones and beer bottles at the building, prompting a police deployment outside the premises and a call from the party for statewide protests.
Earlier the same evening, the vehicle of BJP national executive committee member and former state president PK Krishnadas was also allegedly attacked in the state capital. According to local reports, the attack on the party office was carried out by a two-member group that arrived on a motorbike and threw a beer bottle at the building; CCTV footage of the incident has since surfaced.
BJP blames Congress
BJP National Secretary K Surendran accused Congress workers of carrying out the attacks. “Today evening, the BJP state office was attacked by Congress workers. At around 6 pm, our national leader and former BJP state president, PK Krishnadas, was also targeted. For the last three to four days, Congress workers have been deliberately targeting him,” Surendran said, also referencing a recent black-flag protest by Youth Congress workers against Union Home Minister Amit Shah during his visit to Kollam.
The BJP condemned the attacks, calling the targeting of its state headquarters under the cover of darkness a challenge to democratic values, and said resorting to violence over political disagreements ran counter to the spirit of democratic politics. The party announced it would hold strong protests across Kerala, declaring it “will not bow down before violence.”
Congress offices targeted too
The unrest was not one-sided. Congress offices in the state capital were also targeted the same night — the Thiruvananthapuram District Congress Committee office was pelted with stones, and a fire broke out at the Neyyattinkara Anavoor Mandalam Committee office. Kerala Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan condemned both incidents, calling the attacks “most heinous” and saying such methods do not align with Kerala’s political culture. “Suppressing dissent is a fascist approach,” he said, promising that those responsible would be identified and face strict legal action. Satheesan personally visited the vandalised DCC office.
Backdrop of campus clashes
The attacks followed violent clashes earlier in the day between activists of the SFI, KSU and Youth Congress near the University Men’s Hostel in Thiruvananthapuram, which prompted the SFI to call a statewide strike for October 1. The overall picture, with both ruling and opposition party offices targeted on the same night amid campus-level clashes, points to a broader spike in political tension in the state rather than a single, isolated incident.
No arrests had been confirmed in connection with either set of attacks at the time of these reports, and police investigations into both incidents remain ongoing.
