45 Metro Stations Shut, 250+ Trains Cancelled as Delhi Braces for CJP Protest

Delhi Police have put the capital under heavy security ahead of the Cockroach Janta Party’s (CJP) protest at Jantar Mantar today, deploying everything from an all-women “Pink Force” to facial recognition systems and drones. The CJP is going ahead with what it calls “Jantar Mantar 2.0,” even though police have not granted permission for the demonstration.

    A multi-layered security plan

Facial recognition systems, body cameras, CCTV surveillance, drones and rooftop spotters are all part of the measures in place. More than 35,000 police and paramilitary personnel have been deployed, and six designated detention centres have been set up. Central paramilitary units are also on the ground, along with the specialised Pink Force.

Police personnel have been equipped with uniform-mounted body cameras that can record even in low light. Videos show many officers wearing them. “These body cams are to protect us and others,” an on-duty police official told ANI. He said that when allegations of manhandling are made against Delhi Police, the footage will show whether officers did anything wrong.

Why the Pink Force is out in strength

The all-women team’s deployment comes days after Delhi Police flagged alleged misbehaviour and assaults against women personnel during the Opposition alliance’s protests against Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Officials say male protesters on several occasions dragged women personnel into the crowd, misbehaved with them, tore their clothes and badges, and assaulted them as they tried to maintain order. Additional women personnel from Uttar Pradesh and Haryana have also been called in for today’s protest.

    Hundreds already detained

More than 400 people gathering for the protest have already been detained as a preventive measure, officials said, including 30 to 40 criminals. Police teams have reportedly been told to detain anyone trying to stage the protest, wherever they are found.

    Metro, rail and internet curbs

Forty-five Delhi Metro stations, including Rajiv Chowk, New Delhi, Central Secretariat, Patel Chowk and Kashmere Gate, will stay closed. The DMRC said entry and exit will remain shut from 9 pm on October 9 till 6 pm on October 10, with the situation to be reviewed by security agencies. Interchange will remain available at all affected stations except New Delhi. The Namo Bharat stations at Sarai Kale Khan and New Ashok Nagar will be closed till 10 pm today.

More than 250 trains from other states, plus local trains, scheduled to reach New Delhi and Hazrat Nizamuddin between 4 am and 2 pm, have been cancelled. Internet services have been suspended within a 4 km radius of the Janpath-Kartavya Path crossing for 24 hours, starting last night.

Police: “People have a right to protest”

In a post on X, Delhi Police defended the restrictions. People have a right to protest, they said, but important establishments and constitutional bodies are located in New Delhi, and residents and workers should be able to go about their day safely. Police also pointed to a practical limit: Jantar Mantar is small and can safely hold only about 1,000 people at a time.
