The attack on a Greek Orthodox church during a funeral left several people dead and dozens injured, prompting condemnation from Jordan

India has condemned the attack on a church in Jordan’s Karak Governorate and reiterated its zero-tolerance policy towards terrorism.

The attack took place on Friday, October 23, at a Greek Orthodox church in the Hamoud area of Karak, where gunmen opened fire during a funeral. The incident resulted in multiple deaths and injuries, according to reports from the region.

    Deadly attack during funeral

The shooting targeted people attending a funeral at the church in southern Jordan. Initial reports said at least seven people were killed and dozens were injured. Subsequent reports revised the casualty figures, with Jordanian authorities reporting eight deaths and around 40 injured.

The incident shocked the country, where attacks of this nature are rare. Jordanian authorities described the shooting as an act of extremist terrorism and launched efforts to identify and apprehend those responsible.

    Jordan vows action against perpetrators

Jordan’s King Abdullah II condemned the attack and vowed that those responsible would face severe punishment. Prime Minister Jafar Hassan also denounced the violence, attributing it to extremist ideology and warning against attempts to undermine the country’s unity.

Security was tightened at several locations, including shopping malls and foreign diplomatic missions, as authorities continued their search for the attackers.

    International condemnation

The attack drew condemnation from several countries and international organisations, with calls to protect civilians and places of worship and prevent extremist violence from undermining peaceful coexistence.

India’s condemnation and reaffirmation of its zero-tolerance approach to terrorism underscore its opposition to violence targeting innocent people and religious institutions.

The investigation into the attack remains ongoing. Authorities have not established the perpetrators’ identities or confirmed any links to a specific militant organisation.
