Zelenskyy condemns the strike and calls for stronger sanctions against Moscow
At least 13 people were killed and 10 others injured on Thursday morning after a Russian drone struck a railway platform in Dnipro, Ukraine, where a train was standing, Ukrainian authorities said.
According to Ukrainian Railways, the train was scheduled to travel from Dnipro to Zaporizhzhia when the attack took place. The railway operator said a Russian jet-powered unmanned aerial vehicle struck the platform where train No. 866 was stationed.
The operator added that an elevated threat alert had been issued before the attack. However, a large number of people were still present on the platform when the strike occurred.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack, describing it as horrific and calling for stronger international action against Russia.
In a post on X, Zelenskyy said 13 people had been confirmed dead and expressed condolences to their families. He also said 10 others had been injured and that emergency services were working at the scene.
The Ukrainian president questioned how many more attacks Russia would carry out against Ukrainians, particularly after sanctions on certain Russian oligarchs and the Russian energy sector had been eased rather than further tightened.
Zelenskyy called on the United States and Europe to respond decisively to what he described as Russia’s escalation. He urged the European Union, the United States and the Group of Seven nations to introduce stronger sanctions against Moscow for as long as the war continues.
Dnipro Mayor Borys Filatov also described the incident as a tragedy, saying that a drone had struck a civilian electric train.
Rescue workers and emergency personnel were deployed to the site following the attack.
