N Chandrasekaran, Tata Sons chief, is the new Air India Boss; big decision by Tata Group after takeover

On Monday Tata Sons chief Natarajan Chandrasekaran was appointed as chairman of Air India. Chandrasekaran’s appointment as the chairman of the airline was cleared by its board last week.

Before heading Tata Sons, Chandrasekaran was the chairman of Tata Consultancy Services. He was the third non-Tata, after Nowroji Saklatwala and Cyrus Mistry, to hold the position.

Chandrasekaran began his career as a software programmer in 1987. He rose through the ranks to take the top job when he was just 46 and became one of the youngest CEOs in the Tata group. In 2016, he joined the board of Tata Sons and took over as chairman in 2017.

Earlier, Ilker Ayci, former chairman of Turkish Airlines, turned down the Tata Group’s offer to be the chief executive officer and managing director of Air India. However, Ayci hasn’t given any reason for his refusal of the offer by Tata Group.

“Mr. Chandrasekaran was appointed chairman last week. Another board meeting was held today (Monday) to discuss the way forward,” the source said, adding that the new name for the airline’s managing director & CEO is expected to be announced soon.

Recently, the Tata Group bought the debt-ridden state-owned Air India from the Central government by placing a bid of over Rs.18,000 crore at an auction, and on January 27, it took over the full control of the airlines.
