ED raids 25 locations linked to Al-Falah University amid funding probe
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday carried out searches at 25 locations connected to Haryana-based Al-Falah University as part of an expanding probe into the institution’s funding. The action comes days after three doctors associated with the university were identified as suspects in the recent car blast near Delhi’s Red Fort.
Among the premises searched were the university’s office in Okhla and its 70-acre campus in Faridabad. The central government has already ordered a forensic audit of the university’s accounts, prompting additional scrutiny by the Delhi Police’s Economic Offences Wing (EOW), officials said.
The university, established in 2014 and recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) the following year, is overseen by the Al-Falah Charitable Trust. It offers programmes in engineering, medical sciences, humanities, computer science, and education.
The institution has been under the scanner after explosives were recovered from rooms rented by Muzammil, a doctor linked to the Al-Falah School of Medical Sciences and Research Centre. Investigators seized around 2,900 kg of bomb-making material from his rented accommodation in Faridabad. In a related incident, another doctor, Dr Shaheen, was arrested after assault rifles and other weapons were recovered from her vehicle.
The scrutiny intensified on November 10, when a car explosion near the Red Fort resulted in 13 fatalities and over 20 injuries. The driver, Dr Umar—also affiliated with Al-Falah—was identified as a suicide bomber by the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
Al-Falah University is already facing two cases related to discrepancies flagged by the UGC and the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) over accreditation claims. The Association of Indian Universities has suspended its membership, stating the university “does not appear to be in good standing.”
Vice-Chancellor Prof (Dr) Bhupinder Kaur Anand earlier noted that the university condemned the developments, adding that the institution had no connection with the individuals beyond their employment.
Multiple agencies, including the NIA, ED, and EOW, continue to explore various angles as they attempt to establish the full scope of alleged activities linked to the blast and the university’s operations.
