Al-Qaeda, IS units tighten grip in Kerala campus

The Kerala Police on Saturday ordered a thorough probe into parade held at C H Mohammed Koya Memorial College at Varkala near Thiruvananthapuram by students dressed up like the volunteers of al-Qaeda and IS recently. The order came immediately after the visuals of the parade were aired by Janam TV, 24X7 Malayalam news channel on Saturday.

The rally had al Qaeda flags and posters hailing the terrorist organisations. Nearly hundred students took part in the rally and this would not have happened without the support of the college authorities,” said the intelligence official

Loknath Behra, Director General of Police, told media persons that he has assigned Manoj Abraham, the Inspector General of Police to hold a detailed probe into the incident.

The visuals aired by the channel showed student volunteers dressed up as al-Qaeda and IS activists, with their faces covered waving flags of the banned organisations undertaking a rally in the college premises atop open SUVs and bikes. They were heard shouting slogans hailing the Islamic State and al Qaeda.

The video was similar to the scenes which are aired by news channels reporting from ground zero. Sources in Kerala Police confirmed that the event did take place in the college. “But the college authorities tell that the parade was part of the college day celebrations that took place seven months ago. We are sure that there are IS and al Qaeda elements operating in college because such rallies can never form the part of college day celebrations,” said a senior intelligence official.

What has disturbed the intelligence and counter terrorism wings of the country is the graffiti that has appeared all over the college buildings eulogising Bin Laden and the IS soldiers. “The rally had al Qaeda flags and posters hailing the terrorist organisations. Nearly hundred students took part in the rally and this would not have happened without the support of the college authorities,” said the intelligence official.

C H Mohammed Koya, leader of the Muslim League, was the chief minister of Kerala for 60 days in 1979 and was propped up by the Congress.  Team PGurus had reported earlier that Kerala has become a no-man’s land as far as Hindus are concerned. Early this year, a Marxist student leader Abhilash in Cochin’s Maharaja’s College was murdered in a gruesome manner by Islamic activists. Intelligence agencies in the State were shocked to learn that Abhilash, though a Marxist was a nationalist and was against Love Jihads and his murder was part of a large agenda by the Islamists to make the Marxists free of any Hindu influence.

Though some of the accused in the Abhilash murder case has been arrested by the police, the main suspect managed to escape from the country and he is safely ensconced in the west Asian Islamic Republic.
